So I don't have cancer
« on: June 06, 2008, 09:35:28 PM »
So last week I went to the doctor for a fairly routine exam because I have been out of sorts for a little while.  What ended up happening from this is it was determined that I might have leukemia, which I was tested for on monday.  As you can imagine this caused me much consternation and almost an entire sleepless week, which blessedly ended an hour ago when the doctor, who is clearly a fan of last second rescues, called me as he was leaving for the weekend to tell me that I don't have cancer.

So I declare this the best friday of the year.

Very exciting!

They thought my brother had leukemia like 3 years ago. It was so relieving when we realized he didn't, and I'm his sister...like I can't imagine what you felt, as the person who may have had it.

Here's to good health! :)

Nice.  In honor of you not having cancer, I will listen to The Brian Jonestown Massacre's Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request while psychically making sweet love to you.  Just like I do every Friday night.

Pretty cool how he can make you happy without really doing anything. Just tell someone he might have cancer and then a week later say he doesn't.

Yeah, that's me. I was diagnosed with synovial cell sarcoma

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synovial_cell_sarcoma

back in late 2004. Easiest way to describe it is to call it a muscle tumor (even though that's scientifically inaccurate). The tumor was located where the curve in my scar is on my neck. It was about the size of a baseball. Did 6 rounds of very potent chemo, 23 rounds of radiation, and then the surgery. After the first two rounds of chemo the tumor shrank ~75%. By the time the chemo and radiation was over the tumor was almost completely gone (like only a few millimeters left). For the surgery, they basically cut out all the muscles on the right side of the back of my neck (if you look closely you can tell) and then flipped up the bottom part of my trapezius muscle to fill in the "divot". The surgery left me with some weakness in my right arm (like doing things above my shoulder). I'm almost three years into remission which is awesome because my type of cancer has a 60% recurrance rate in the first two years. Rates go down every year there after until year seven when you're considered "cured". I was treated at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and I go back there every 3-4 months for scans to make sure it hasn't come back.

I'm glad to hear you guys are well.

The whole cancer thing is so strange. One day the body decides,"Hey! lets start building fingernail cells in the brain!" Or "Hey! wee need to start forming some teeth in the colon!"

The whole thing is mind boggling. :dizzy

That's really not how it works. A normal cell just can't stop dividing, and so all of its divisions can't stop dividing.

But there was some kid who had a tooth grow on his foot once.

I know but it is still foreign cell production in the body. There have been tumors where doctors have found fully developed teeth, hair and fingernails.
