So I finally got around to RFoM

First, the graphics are not that bad; in fact, I was pleasantly surprised at what Insomniac were able to accomplish.

Now I love me some FPS action but I remember since Halo on Xbox that the controls were just... ugh. It seems like you are fighting enemies as well as your gamepad.

The only game where I ever felt comfortable with using a gamepad for a FPS was Goldeneye, but I've read on forums that the controls in RFoM were pretty solid.

So, I bit the bullet and tried the game out, with abated breath and much diminished expectations on how the game would feel with a gamepad.

I tolerated literally one minute. Where with K+M I would have got headshot after headshot I found myself fumbling with the controls and focusing more on that than on the game proper. I simply cannot fathom how gamers can be used to - prefer, even - gamepads for FPS action. It simply doesn't compute. I'm not trying to be snobbish about this issue (as the PS3 does allow you, with certain games, to use K+M - which is good!) but please tell me I'm not insane to think those who enjoy FPSs with gamepads is simply because ignorance is bliss; they don't know, or have not experienced, anything better by way of controls, and not because they view the gamepad as superior for FPSs.

Put another way: do any of you, who have both PCs and consoles, actually prefer to use the gamepad in lieu of a K+M combo for your gaming proclivities?

So this topic isn't about Resistance?

Yep, I prefer gamepad. I've played some PC FPS games (UT) before I played my Halo and stuff. I'm accurate enough with my gamepad and it's just more comfortable for me than M/K (sitting on a couch, the way my arms rest, the way I look at a screen, the way everything is at my fingertips neatly together, etc). By now the 360 pad feels like putting on a glove, especially controlling Halo.
Try to imagine that not everyone has your bad gamepad fps skills too. The sixaxis/ds3 isn't as good for fps as the 360 pad either (triggers, thumbsticks, form, stick placement)

I guess I should change the title, eh?

Yeah, I've heard wonders about the 360's gamepad for FPS gaming and horrors about the Sixaxis.

I admit, I suck with the gamepad on FPSs (but it's probably more to do with my unwillingness to "learn" to get comfortable with the gamepad, being I'm already so comfortable with K+M). Pulling combos with SF3 is not a problem at all, and I'm ace with platformers, but FPSs... man!

I have friend who can't get the hang of K+M for the life of him, so whenever he comes over I hook up the gamepad for him.

I don't think the keyboard takes away the "having everything at your fingertips", though. With the keyboard it's the same, just with more keys.

Do you game much on PC? Do you have a gamepad for your PC, and if you do, do you use it for FPSs?

I used to game a lot on my PC, but as I grow older (23 now) I just find the console experience more comfortable. Last time I bought a PC game was Geometry Wars on steam and it refused to start and when I did get it to run it had problems with my logitech gamepad.
I don't really care whether K/M is more accurate, a gamepad still feels more comfortable for playing a game/fps to me. For me it's a nice compromise between accuracy (depends on your skill too, of course), comfortability, and other stuff.
When I get a new PC somewhere in the future I might dabble in some new FPS games, but I'd probably get one of those 360 wireless receivers to hook up my 360 pad with the PC.

I know some do not have any problems; similarly, some are aversive towards K+M.

Do you play FPSs on a PC as well, though? What control method do you prefer?

If you ever get around to it, I'd be very interested to know how they compare for you.

I used to play FPS's on the PC all the time, I still have a blast through the Crysis demo once in a while, but ever since I bought my PS3 I've gamed on there. I suppose its just because I'm used to the controller now, if I started using KB+M again I'd get used to it too.

Though I do agree the aiming is "off" in Resistance, its why I barely touched the multiplayer.

Well, a few months ago I did try Far Cry on PC (since it was free and ad-supported). Whatever M/K skills I had built up through playing UT and Halo PC I completely lost. I felt like I was drunk and my hands had arthritis. It was sad. Recently I tried Halo 2 on my old xbox and had similar problems with the Duke controller (which I originally loved), my hands have grown so accustomed to the 360 pad I felt like I was playing with claw hands.

I don't have a problem playing FPS games with gamepads.

It's not nearly as accurate as a keyboard mouse, but most console FPS games are dumbed down with auto aim and stupid enemies, so it balances out.

I missed the boat on playing shooters with a kb/m altogether, so gamepads are the only way to go for me. Coming at it from the opposite direction, I can see where you're coming from. It's a comfort thing, mostly. If you're accurate with a kb/m, it would surely feel like a step backwards to use a controller.

That said, I find the PS3 controller horrible for FPS games, so it may not be the best example for your first impression.

I really, sincerely, honestly, in every possible way, cannot at all get my head around console FPS controls. I've never played a console FPS with controls that didn't make me think "Man, you know what would really make this game better? A keyboard and mouse".

My first console was a PC, and my preference for that method of control is never going to change.
