I think the cheapest including data was 50 or 59.  Not sure offhand.  For my phone with 3G, I pay 60 a month, and that's with a discount.

Yeah, data plans aren't cheap, but they are sure as fuck useful.  I use my phone for data ten times as much as I use it for talking.  I also have a separate 3G plan for my laptop.

...And a fully-functional MP3/video player, plus the best web browser on a pocket-sized device ever.  Have you ever used a smartphone before?  They can be incredibly useful; I loved using a Treo 600 and 650 years ago.

If it's actually between 20,000-30,000 yen for an iPhone in Japan, I am buying one for sure.  Shit I'll get the 16gb model and then I won't need my iPod Touch anymore.

Going by my iPod Touch, iPhone/Touch rocks because of its internet capabilities and ULTRA-STRONG touch screen.  You are NOT going to get scratches on it.  It's amazing.

Service plan is cheap for what you get and I use the GPS, Ultimate Inbox (gmail, AIM, Yahoo!, MSN and Helio e-mail), and video all the time.  It's pretty great that you can snap a pic and upload it to a private server.  Or geotag it and put it on your Flickr account.  You can upload videos straight to YouTube now.  And they've got apps for YouTube (full YouTube, not crappy YouTube mobile) AND Opera Mini, which is a kickass browser.

My main grievances with the device have been multimedia functionality, ease of navigation and some quirks (like why can't I listen to music and IM/browse at the same time).  But these look to be address with the Ocean 2.  Which is going to have Flash support for the browser.
