Gameinformer previews Infamous
« on: June 09, 2008, 08:05:13 PM »
Courtesy of kintaro @ NeoGAF

Quote
- "Infamous begins with a serene, panoramic skyview view of EMpire City on the title screen, with the words "press start flashing". ..once you push start, a massive explosion rips through the heart of the city. Six city blocks are consumed by flame...in the center, a man named Dylan staggers to his feet."
- Dylan doesn't know how he got his powers and starts out apathetic. He then becomes invest in the city...or you can choose not to be at all.
- Dylan can run up rooftops, scrambles across building architecture, and can seek cover in unlikely nooks and crannies.
- Sucker Punch striving for simple controls to do not so simple things
- Empire City has 3 islands
- After the explosion, the city falls into chaos. A plague makes the govt. quarantine the city. Gangs are formed.
- Dylan's abilities evolve throughout the game
- One fight saw Dylan and his friend Zeke against a bunch of guard. A couple of choices include zapping the mobs and flinging them off the bridge, or using your electricity on the environment (i.e. power generators that may be nearby) to create explosions.
- Sucker Punch says "The hero's powers and the storyline are in support of the gameplay."
- Dylan cannot use firearms since his powers are "always on" (meaning he would set off the gunpowder in bullets). The powers can complicate your actions within the world.
- There will be other "villians" with their own powers that come into play. As well as other normal enemies with powers.
- - Infamous isn't structured like other open world games with a marker on the mini map for your next mission. The team's goal is to create a world where events unfold naturally.
- For example, you're on your way to disarm a bomb, but you notice a woman in the street bleeding and screaming. Time is ticking. What do you do? Your actions affect the world at large. Hence "Infamous".

- Karma system keeps track of your actions. Your actions affect the actions of the citizens of the city. They may fight with you or ignore you or even help fight against you. Karma also factors into how your abilities develop.

Sounds hot. And Sucker Punch knows how to craft awesome characters (especially villains) and good stories, so it should be sexy as hell. Now, we wait for scans.

Wonder if GI stole an exclusive from EGM?

EGM has been promising an Infamous preview for months...

Not to knock Infamous, because it looks amazing and I love Sucker Punch, but GI is the last place to go for trustworthy previews. Every single issue with a front-page story preview is a sticky situation. The praise a game up and down and when it comes to review time, they give it a 3.5

Well, Sucker Punch made the best platformers out of Sony's second party developers, so at least this could actually be good, unlike Ratchet.

If anything, GI previews read like extended PR. Which is fine, as the information is still genuine, but yeah. The best was the COD4 article, where the static backgrounds were talked up as somehow being great achievements.

Well, Sucker Punch made the best platformers out of Sony's second party developers, so at least this could actually be good, unlike Ratchet.

Ratchet was plenty good. The problem was that it had already been released a few times over.

Ok, being serious, Sony at least has a few new interesting franchises up its sleeve. This one being one of them. MS does not really.
There's Alan Vaporwake of course...

it's safe to be enthusiastic for this exclusive, xbots. first of all, it won't be a graphics powerhouse in any way, meaning the developers are focusing on gameplay instead of making the cell/rsx combo perform comparably to the 360 hardware (:bow :bow xenos :bow2 :bow2) -- so it won't suck like uncharted.  second of all, sucker punch are above mere fanboyism, and actually give a shit about trying to advance game design in a practical, reasonable way, instead of promising the moon and then giving us lair. lastly, SUPERPOWERS! SANDBOX! CHARACTER CUSTOMIZATION! HUGELY DESTRUCTABLE ENVIRONMENTS! OMG OMG OMG.

I know, but it still seems like this may be another Heavenly Sword, Uncharted, or Killzone 2: an okay title that's hyped to the moon because it's got some pseudo-second party working on it.

sucker punch doesn't tend to overpromise, though. the devs for heavenly sword, uncharted, lair, and killzone 2 all talk(ed) a lot of shit about their engine and their physics and their facial animation routines and their ai and talk(ed) very little about gameplay mechanics, game design, or reasonable hardware expectations. infamous isn't an ambitious game -- it's just one with a cool design sufficient for a superhero-based nerdgasm. there's nothing in that preview beyond some gi-spawned hyperbole that isn't capable of being effectively realized on a next-gen platform, and given sucker punch's track record, i'm safely optimistic. there's very little pseudo-technical in that preview for the sony set to latch onto, and thus feed the hype machine that catapulted the titles you mentioned into undue prominence.

well, i think. i do occasionally underestimate the fervor of this generation's gamecube's fans. still, i think infamous is more re4 and less rogue leader, as it were.

It'll then be the most awesome "OK" title in the history of forever. Sucker Punch is a good developer. I don't necessarily expect them to set the world on fire with groundbreaking features and whatnot, but Sucker Punch makes really good entertainment. I guess I'm hoping the company still sticks to the "cartoony" despite venturing into a more realistic presentation, but whatever happens, I'm certain that it will be a shitload of fun, and have tons of personality. Hell, even lowly roadblock enemies in the Sly games had more personality than most main characters in other games. And Sucker Punch knows how to write a good heist story. Add some super-human powers and crazy bosses, and, well, you'd have to hate fun to not be at least somewhat interested in this.

:bow Sucker Punch :bow2

It's a shame it will be adopted as the next big hope by the dungtribe, although I guess that's just an inevitability regardless of what exclusive you're talking about. :/

Conceptually Infamous deserves the hype, whereas the other three were derivative right from the start.

Yup, plus pedigree.

In a world with this and Prototype though, we'll see if I buy this.

They appear quite different to me. Prototype seems to be steeped in rage, and looks to be doing great things with that. I expect this one to have plenty more substance though.

This will probably prove completely false as we learn more, but at this point I'm viewing this as more of the Batman to Prototype's Hulk. We'll see, both games look like they will rock.

Obviously it doesn't matter to me since I made the right choice, but I'll say that I wish this was multiplatform for the simple reason that Sucker Punch deserves better than to be reduced to fanboy ammo. Trolling systems and their owners is pretty awesome, but it does get annoying when it begins to seep into every thread where a game is discussed. And on a childish level, I really hate the fact that this game is going to serve as a codpiece for every kittonwy out there.

Nice not-so-subtle dig there.  :lol

But yeah, I love Sucker Punch.  Their games might not receive over-the-top hyping, but in my opinion they've shown they're a AAA developer so far in Rocket and Sly.

I'm pretty darn confident they'll pull off something awesome in Infamous.

Actually you rae missing the point.  Instead of an idiotic moral compass like a Bioware game, it sounds like the decisions you make will actually affect gameplay (ie. cutting into limit on your main mission), which is a really good risk reward system.  The more I think about it the cooler it sounds.

If they implement it in a cool way, then I'll be happy.  but fuck, games with "moral decisions" are a dime a dozen these days, it's hard to not to judge.

Otherwise, GTA with superpowers always sounds like a good time--not enough games like that around. actually, Crackdown is the only one?

I sat that but didn't respond as Onix is very... unstable at times.  Kittowny had some good input about DMC4 that didn't involve rawrrawrrawr but that's the nature of gimmick characters and its tiring to have to glean the good stuff from all the shit they spew.

Just noticed that thread is from last July. Are trophies or whatever ever coming in full force?
