200k a year isn't rich!
« on: June 10, 2008, 03:06:45 PM »
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/06/10/cnbcs-bartiromo-misleads_n_106256.html

Quote
Still, on matters of tax policy, you'd sort of like the anointed experts to have their facts right, and not indulge in misleading characterizations of the impact of that policy. Unfortunately, Bartiromo can't resist getting a little hysterical:

The income tax is also in for a bump. Bartiromo says, "Right now [it] is 35 percent, Obama wants to take that to 39 percent . . . We're talking about people who make over $200,000. That's not rich. So it's actually going to impact more people than you may think."

Bartiromo's suggestion that $200K per annum income is "not rich," and that an increased tax on those who earn that much represents some sort of widespread impact on mainstream earners is flatly false. The facts are these: in 2005, the national median income was a mere $44,389. And, according to the 2006 U.S. Census data on household income, households earning $200K or more represent a slim 3.5% of all households. That means that over 95% of all American households would likely prefer to have the problem Obama would impose on the nations' elite earners.

Thats depressing. Is it even possible to be rich anymore!

$200k is really good ... I'd argue it's rich, though in CA, it's definitely low-end rich.

I think it's certainly "you don't have a right to complain about taxes" level rich.

More than 150k is the border of legitimately rich in my opinion, but it's not like I SHIT MONEY rich.  You can live comfortably on a third that, though where you live definitely makes a big difference, as do kids, a mortgage etc (though you get yourself into that shit).

150k won't get you a decent house where I live.  Maybe a condo.
I guess if you determine richness by ability to afford a decent house, then yeah, the limit can get quite a bit higher depending on where you live.

Townhouses around here cost a million bucks, it's crazy and it sucks.  We need more categories.  Rich, Rich++, Rich Alpha MAX Ultra?

I feel like the middle class has been priced out of affordable home ownership in places where they might actually want to live.  It's no surprise the housing market keeled over after the huge price inflation.

I guess I'm gonna have to reconfigure my class definitions.  Is middle class the ability to own a decent home in a good area?  If so, I guess Eric P is right and I am lower class scum as long as I stay in Arlington :'(

Though what does that make the people who make half what I do and still get by?

Is Aftertime the place on King Street that's about the size of a walk-in closet?  Neat shop.  I haven't been to any in Arlington (doesn't seem like there are any very near me anyway), but there's a good shop in Georgetown called Big Planet Comics.  They seem to focus on bound books more than floppies and toys.  There is a lot of superhero stuff, but it's big enough that there's more to it.  I haven't noticed any absences when I've been browsing there, though I'm probably not all that familiar with too much stuff off the beaten path.
http://www.bigplanetcomics.com/ is their site, I might have to stop in for their July 4th sale.  20% off ain't bad.  I will definitely be walking there on the fourth though :lol

BTW further local yokel discussion of this nature might as well be done in PMs, this thread is for class warfare :gun

The most I ever made per year in my life is $220,000 (salary from job - not including investments, etc..)

I must say that when I was bringing in that kinda cash from my 40 hr/week gig I felt very rich... I really didnt ever think about how much money i was spending on anything because i could never spend it all....

By the time i move back to cali i will be collecting well more than that from investments - so the times of GOLD will return.

Now-a-days im more like a <$190K year guy and I STILL never meet anyone that can really hang with me.

Having said that - I think if a mate can bust over 100K in todays economy they should be considered 'rich'

Semantics aside, the $200k cut off for the upper bracket is way too low. Should be closer to $400-500K.

Hell, I'd even be in favor of an "uber-rich tax bracket" for those making $1 million+.

Wealthy means more than a salary--it also means possession of property, an absence of debt, etc.  My ex-GF made literally twice as much as me, but due to unfortunate circumstances had a lot of debt she was paying off; this meant that in practical terms, I was more "wealthy"--I had more money I could spend, more I could invest, etc.  Still, it was weird having to loan her money every once in a while when she overextended her bank account.

I make about 30k, but have very little in expenses anymore because I just don't buy shit.  That and I house/dog sit for a friend that works in Asia about 340 days a year.

But since I'm freelance I have to figure out my own taxes every year, which sucks.  But oh well, the benefits outweigh the hassle imo.

lolz, it's all about environment in my case.  I have like two friends here in Wilmington, and we like to cook dinner at home occasionally and watch tv series on dvd, in addition to doing volunteering shit for the Humane Society and the Obama campaign.  Back in Atlanta, all of my friends are alcoholics that like to go out to eat.  Basically they're nice people but they're a fucking money pit.  I could spend more in one week with those fuckers than I do in a month or so in Wilmington.

my life style completly changed in the past 6 months.

I used to spend a fuckload of money on various shit like videogames, dvds and so on. I realised I had too many 50$ games sleeping on my shelves. One morning I realised how foolish it was; I turned around and sold all of them on ebay, and gave the money to a local place that trains dogs for blind and disabled people. I got around 400$.

I got an online game rental account (like netflix but canadian), and the amount of money I save is insane. Same thing for dvds such stuff.

It's pretty crazy how videogames is an expensive hobby when you really get into it like most of us are, I mean, most of us are people who buy 2-3 games a month, and it adds up real quick.

Property can easily mean any solid investment or asset I guess.  Who would you consider wealthier, of two people with the same salaries: the person who, like me, spends all his money on coke and prostitutes, or the person who saves and invests that money?
