Incredible Hulk game impressions
« on: June 11, 2008, 10:05:25 PM »
I'll do a pros & cons, cons first:

Cons:
  • framerate problems, especially when running fast (holding RB)
  • terrible draw distance, last gen quality
  • buildings all go down in the same animation
  • glitchy, could've used a couple more months of polish... just random glitches here and there, nothing game-breaking tho
  • cutscenes are awful and literally about 3 or 4 seconds long
  • story is boring so far and not told in an entertaining way (a tape recorder)
  • vehicle variety is low, i've never seen so many taxis in a game.  sometimes there are like 10 taxis on one street.
  • textures are not good
  • i could see the missions getting repetitive like UD but not a big issue
  • can't run up buildings like in UD...have to scale them by hand but it's not too bad
  • can't shorten or lengthen the distance of jumps while in mid-air, can only change direction
  • combat system is less robust than UD

Pros:
  • guess what?  none of that shit matters due to this one fact:  it's fun, i'm having a blast
  • after the first hour or so, i became tolerant of the technical issues (kind of like mass effect) and didn't care anymore.  Unless you're some anal GAF taco that obsesses over that sort of stuff then it's not a big deal.  The game is not too difficult.. ive died a few times out of sheer stupidity more than anything else, so the technical issues won't get you killed or anything.. won't hinder your enjoyment
  • hulk model looks great
  • there's an upgrade system that upgrades hulks abilities and strength / jumping / speed / etc... it's called Feats.  You complete certain feats and it unlocks that ability or upgrade... i like this system a lot, it's fun trying to get them all.  Example feats are like killing x number of this enemy in x time, or use this object to kill 10 enemies, or jump a  total distance of whatever feet, or knock an enemy 436 ft in the air (this is an achievement too), and many more
  • achievements are well done... they're not the grinding type.  Look here: link
  • there's mini-games that use a Gold/silver/bronze medal system, like a race through big green circle rings in a certain time, and killing as many enemies as u can in x time, and destroy as many cars as u can in 40 seconds, and destroy as many buildings u can in x time, etc... some of these are really hard.. i can only get like bronze and silver.  The race one is too hard, i cant even medal that one
  • destruction is great and hasn't gotten too boring yet... i love smashing stuff in games so maybe my tolerance for the repetitiveness of this is higher than others
  • there are 50 real landmarks in the game that you can destroy and get a token... collect all 50 for achievement.  They are all listed on the map so it's not too hard and i think it's actually pretty fun.  Stark building there too
  • overall the cons really don't matter in the end simply because the game is entertaining.  Ultimate Destruction is better but a game 75% as good as UD is still better than most of the shit out there today

Incredible Hulk is a must-play if you like smashing stuff and sandbox games.  I'd probably just rent it..

Good to hear. I passed on picking this one up, figuring I'd wait for reviews and impressions, and your impressions are certainly more inspiring than the reviews. I kinda figured this would be fun, flaws aside.

I'm now holding you personally responsible for when I check this out! :whip

The game has frozen 3 times in a row on the mission where you gotta retrieve the nanite thing from a garbage truck.  And each time it was when I finished the mission and it froze on the loading screen after and each time it didn't save!!!!! this is a pretty long mission, like 15 minutes...

Do any of you have a scanner? Does the instructions come with credits inside? Would be very interested in them.

Incoming reviews of the film have cooled my interest in this game. But I am digging the EDF comparisons, which might push me to Blockbuster.

The missions have gotten very repetitive.  They mostly consist of fetching items and bringing them back to whatever marker on the map and also escort missions.  Those are probably the two worst and most cliched types of missions in videogames.  The fun of destruction and sandbox aspect of the game has worn off now.  I'm almost half-way through according to the progress bar on the map screen but I don't think I'll continue.  I'm probably gonna return it to Blockbuster today.  You'll have fun for about four or five hours but overall I don't even think it's worth a rental.  Still better than GTA4, though.

4 or 5 hours is a lot of game time. In dog years.

I know it is a different developer than Ultimate Destruction, but what are the main /bad/ differences between the two?

And how much should I really go back and pick up UD if I'm not turning on my PS2 that much...?
