...the new state-prescribed limit for male waistlines is a strict 33.5 inches...

Quote
To reach its goals of shrinking the overweight population by 10 percent over the next four years and 25 percent over the next seven years, the government will impose financial penalties on companies and local governments that fail to meet specific targets.

Quote
But critics say that the government guidelines — especially the one about male waistlines — are simply too strict and that more than half of all men will be considered overweight.

Quote
With the new law, Matsushita has to measure the waistlines of not only its employees but also of their families and retirees. As part of its intensifying efforts, the company has started giving its employees “metabo check” towels that double as tape measures.

Quote
NEC, Japan’s largest maker of personal computers, said that if it failed to meet its targets, it could incur as much as $19 million in penalties.

“I don’t think the campaign will have any positive effect. Now if you did this in the United States, there would be benefits, since there are many Americans who weigh more than 100 kilograms,” or about 220 pounds, Mr. Ogushi said. “But the Japanese are so slender that they can’t afford to lose weight.”

By the way the limits for companies work, it sounds like Japan is about to have a problem with weight discrimination.  I'm sure they'll be keeping an eye on the size of new hires, and preferring those who are thinner.  Likewise, i wouldn't be surprised if we see where the 'overweight' people in some of these companies might suddenly find themselves the target of some of Japan's more notorious 'forced resignation' tactics to get their number of fatties down.

God knows if they instituted this at my company, we'd just pay the fucking 19 million.  There's no way we could meet those goals.

It makes sense since it'll cut down on long-term health costs.  Britain has a similar thing with the healthcare you can receive and your BMI.  There should be an exception for those who have a genetic predisposition to being fat.  This is sort of overkill for Japan though since I've heard that they have a very thin population.

I mean, a 33.5 inch waistline is pretty tight if you're moderately tall but in shape.

I've already joined the resistance movement!  We're gonna go in front of government buildings and eat donuts in protest.

Perhaps the earthquake this morning was the result of angry fatties?   :o

What's going to happen to all the sumo wrestlers? :'(

Good question, this seems to be targeted at companies, so they're fine.  Unless the people behind this are insane...and this being Japan, that is likely!

So basically, they want Japan to be full of twigs and even more men that look like girls.

This... is not right.

There is zero benefit to being fat. There are plenty of benefits for being the right weight. Also, as am nintendo said, the government saves on healthcare budget. Same thing with smoking - it's so heavily taxed because a good part of that money gets poured into saving lung cancer, emphysema and peripheral disease patients from diseases associated with smoking. Now the Japanese will have money to combat obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases.

Seriously.

And 33" is small anyway. And it ignores height and muscle. And it is going to result in employment problems. It's stupid.

Routine traffic stops would require a tape measure.

"Put your hands behind your head and relax your belly!"

I don't think it's distinguished mentally-challenged at all, perhaps extreme, I'll lend you that. But look at all the fat asses in America, you know what a lot 'em's problem is? They think it's okay to be fat tubs of shit. At least Japan has the balls to say "Fatties, what the fuck? Get that shit goin!"

And guess whos problem/responsibility it is that they are fat.

I don't see anything wrong with being fat. I'm skinny myself, but i'm a FA and yeah, extreme obesity is a problem but between 20-150 lbs overweight isn't anything bad at all.

It is the government's job to look after its citizens' health. Being obese leads to numerous risk factors which of course are health-related.

I can definitely see their train of logic here.

It's not the government's job to keep you healthy, it's our choice whether to be healthy or not. You are right. That isn't the issue. The issue for the Japanese government is this: they have a public health system (and a good one at that) so either they continue diverting their annual budget to treat health problems related to obesity or they charge you for being obese and still have the money to cover their budget. You can still be obese - nobody's stopping you from it. You just have to pay for "obesity tax" which gets channeled back to you when you finally get diabetes or a heart attack and it's the government that has to pay the bill anyhow.

You know, just like cigarettes.

Then weigh them when they go for driver's licenses, don't impose penalties on their employers. What the fuck are companies gonna do if their employees don't wanna go on a diet? Fire them? How does that help society?

As if the government should be this involved in your shit anyway, and as if the single measurement of waistline means jack shit.

I agree the employers aren't the ones to blame. I also agree that it's ridiculous to use a waistband to measure. You'd need a proper weight assessment. And yes, get them when they apply for their ID card or drivers license.

But I think that while the execution would be flawed, the economic and social principles are sound. For the Japanese government they don't have the moral option of saying "screw you guys, we ain't footin' your medical bills anymore on account of you eating yourself to death". They have the "social obligation" to provide such services because they have done so for years and their tremendous sense of family and respect for elders ethically binds them to this "obligation".

This isn't the US we're talking about. The health system there isn't anything like the one in Japan, or Hong Kong, or Taiwan for that matter, where public healthcare infrastructure is frequently better than the private sector. That's got to have a pretty penny.

You still haven't told me anything wrong with it. Diabetes and heart attache? Um, theres no more risk to get that then when you're skinny.

Here's a list:

Type 2 diabetes
Heart disease
High cholesterol
Sleep apnea
Varicose veins
Breast, endometrial, prostate, and colon cancers
Arthritis
Gallbladder disease
Rashes and other skin abnormalities (such as warts)
High blood pressure

And I hardly think the Japanese government is combating one extreme with another - it's about maintaining a healthy weight. Nobody's saying that they are advocating starvation-level skinniness.
