Personally, I think everything a steel string acoustic can do a classical can do better.
And really I see no real reason for the steel string acoustic.
Yes, the classical guitar has a wider neck and bigger frets. But if you're going to be doing flamenco, or brazilian jazz, you're going to need that space. Plus it's always easier to compact things down than to learn on a smaller neck and frets and then try to learn to use all the space you have.
I started on a steel string acoustic and really I should be more greatful to it, but I've since fallen completely out of love with those. The action is almost always too high, you don't have enough room, the strings and the tone are too harsh and you can't get nearly as much expressiveness out of it even compared to an electric guitar, let alone a classical guitar. I know I'm way in the minority on this, but that's my ardently held view. If you're serious about acoustic music, drop the steel and go nylon.
