The Punisher is a Marvel character, hence they are the license holder, so it's a Marvel production.

What's killing me about the movie is that the trailer looks like it's played really straight, but other materials make it look like an adaptation of Garth Ennis' run on the comic, which had a lot of dark, really dark, darker than dark, "no-c'mon-really?" dark humor in it.

The only thing on Marvel's slate is Ant-Man, Thor, Iron Man 2, Captain America and The Avengers. I gather after last weekend's haul and if it doesn't drop like a rock like Ang Lee's Hulk, we'll see another Hulk film too.

It's a Marvel property. Marvel didn't say, "OK, here's Punisher! Do whatever you want!" Marvel gets production credits on anything they license out; that studio ID at the beginning of any of their trailers... that's what I'm talking about. What are YOU talking about?

edit: Marvel has their own studio? I assumed it was just a production office for brokering deals... no?

Are you insane?

First, Marvel doesn't have a say! This is Lionsgate's baby all the way. That's like saying that Marvel had a say with Fox on X-Men or Fantastic Four. That's absolutely distinguished mentally-challenged.

Marvel's studio ID is not on the beginning of the trailer. Anything licensed from Marvel Entertainment (which is NOT Marvel Studios!) has the logo on it, just as Warner Bros. puts DC Comics dumb logo on its films. You think DC Comics has any say about film production too?

No, Marvel has a studio. Marvel Studios produced Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk.

Marvel Entertainment is just a part of the Marvel corporate umbrella that licenses characters out to other film studios - like Fox, Lionsgate, Sony, etc. And after the money exchanges hands, they really have no say on what happens.

That was the reason why Marvel Studios was created. In light of the ability to create and successful market comic book adaptations, they got tired of stuff like Ang Lee's Hulk, Fantastic Four and such being out of their control.

They want a cohesive universe that's more in line with the comics.
