Persona 3: FES - I apologize
« on: June 16, 2008, 11:02:26 PM »
I didn't give this game enough of a chance. I let the love of trolling Himu-chan override my desire to play fun games. It wasn't until hour 6 that I realized Persona 3 has a lot in common, in terms of gameplay mechanics, with my beloved .Hack games. Yes yes, most everything is done BETTER, but I find the similarities endearing. Plus the game kinda hooked me for good when I watched the semi-omniscient lady dump bags of coins into every fountain at the mall. Plus I kinda wanna help that kid get some teacher sex.

persona 3 didn't take with me the first time, either. fes adds just enough addt'l content to move the game from annoying animu gannt planner to amusing rpg.

Are you dating the swim team captain yet?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
This game had a lot of legitimately good dungeon crawling, hard battles, and a good combat system.  It was the forced, saccharine sim stuff that turned me off.
[close]

Really?  Because I think the dungeon crawling is the game's weakest link.  The dungeons are so bland.  They're just really simple mazes with no character or traps or a sense of loot collection.

yeah, i thought the dungeon crawling kinda sucked. the game was best in the boss battles, or when you're fuckin' around trying to make overpowered personas and stack skills. fes added a few more social links, which leaves a little less open time in the schedule and forces you to make compromises rather than min-max the gannt chart and then spend whole weeks grinding the same floors for persona ranks.

I do like Persona 3, mind y'all.  I was just mildly disappointed because I was expecting SMT Mysterious Dungeon, and that's not what I got.  After I cleared my head and accepted that the game wasn't what I was expecting, I approached it again and enjoyed what I played.

i had the same reaction, too, although i never got over being pissed that the simulated classmates think you're COOL for being a smarty nerd, instead of beating your ass in the hallway for being an ass-kissing know-it-all punk. still, fes added the awesome student council commu link with the machivellian vice president, and you get to help him with his inquisition :bow2 :bow2

edit: oops, i am wrong, he was in the original too :'(

One other thing I don't quite like is that in some social interactions, the results of your dialogue selections don't always bring predictable responses.  That might seem like a bitch boy complaint (because unpredictability is supposed to be a part of some games), but as an RPG min/max-type player, that means I have to reload my fucking game and find out which response is best.

you can usually guess what they wanna hear. The japanese are all about growing up and flattery. Basically if any question involves serious life implications, you pull the toughen up moron card. Anything like 'do i look teh pretty' you pull the 'SURE YOU DO' card.

tvc: i dunno about that, the responses are based on the simple personality archetype of the character. the track kid likes you to taunt him so he can get pumped about you being his rival; the geek girl is afraid of contact; the nazi council kid wants you to say amoral things to support his reign; etc etc

that said, one thing ALWAYS HOLDS TRUE: never tell any of the bitches that they look fat. COMMU RANK DOWN

Maybe you're right.  It's been long enough since I played that I can't cite specific examples, but I do recall it happening.  Maybe it was just before I knew the characters well.

you have to assume a different persona every time you talk to someone. so basically, just recognize their personalities and what they want and answer what they wanna hear. Sometimes you may pick a wrong answer but hey, you may be able to level them up next time.

Yeah, you have to work on your academics every single chance you get if you want to get that maxed out. Donate to the shrine every day, and then study every night you don't go to Taurtarus or are sick.

don't even play the Answer, there's NO content in it! 99% of it is just stupid level grinding and the few story bits that are in it are really absolutely awful, plus all the bosses are mundane enemies with palette swaps

just watch the ending on youtube if you're that curious, but then again there's really nothing to see... bring on P4

I was pretty skeptical of this game after all the bashing it received from some people here but having now put 30 hours into it I quite enjoy it. I still like Nocturne's tone and battle system more, but P3's world is pretty engrossing to me in a very cheesy kind of way. More so than most other JRPG's that shove their plot into your face. The only flaws I really see with the game is the randomly generated floors of the tower and not being able to have direct control over your party (their not really severe problems just things I would've done differently).

Lay it to me straight, guys. Is this game worth getting? I might pick it up tonight at work. I've had an itch for a good RPG lately. I'm thinking about either getting this or Wild Arms 1 off PSN, however this game is supposedly amazing. Plus it'd only be like $20 or so.

EDIT: Ah, whatever. I ordered it. I can't pass up a hard to find game. I still have Suikoden I and II, which I'm going to sell to a friend soon for hundreds of dollars.
