Square Enix's grandiose plans for a Final Fantasy XIII three-way appear to be a bit stalled. The action oriented spin-off known as Final Fantasy Versus XIII may be coming even later than expected, which should come as a surprise to absolutely no one. According to an interview with Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura in the newest issue of Famitsu, he explains that development is the side story is currently "on hold," with development staff of that game now tasked with getting FFXIII out the door.

Given that it's been over two years since Square Enix first showed off its FFXIII offerings and we're still getting trailers devoid of gameplay, we certainly don't expect to see Final Fantasy XIII until well into 2009. We'll pencil in Versus for 2013 or so.

Let's give it up for ten-year console life cycles!

Know what pisses me off about FF?

There's no easy option. Here's a game with a mega budget, big ass story, but will give you these grinding fests that if you don't put through it, you will get stuck in some boss.

I hate it. I had to restart 8 and 10 because of that shit. FF XII man, that game was boring, 40 hours in and i was done with the game, talk about a grinding fest.

I just hope FFXIII is accessible. I want to play the game, and not have to grind, let it be more about skill for christ sakes.

I imagine Square-Enix looked at the budget for FFvsXIII and realized that they have to depend on revenue of XIII to continue on and be financially stable.  With FFXIII taking forever, it is either going to be an amazing masterpiece or a high budget failure.  Versus should be a 360 title or at least a simultaneous release with PS3.  The days of Sony domination are over.  SE, along with other stubborn developers, need to wake up.

I mean, the whole pic with the forests and dinosaurs and shit looks like Final Fantasy to me. So do some of the Versus shots with the moon and crap. The art direction screams Final Fantasy to me, something I've not experienced in 7 fucking years. I can't help but feel excited.

That doesn't even make sense.  I mean, they pulled people off of the project in order to complete XIII.  Who exactly would work on Versus?  If they had a team left to work on Versus I don't think releasing it on 360 would really have an impact on their work load.

This cancellation likely has little to do with PS3 itself.  Putting it on 360 wouldn't necessarily be a bad idea, of course, but the game would still need to be made.

I'm not even slightly surprised that the game was put on hold, though.

Actually he doesn't say Versus is completely on hold.  He says there are still programmers, designers and concept artists working on the game's foundation, while most of the in-game graphics staff concentrates on XIII.  He also says something about FF13's development I don't really understand:

Square Enix is fast to slam the book down on the recent reports about Final Fantasy Versus XIII being put on the back burner. The company has gone out with a statement on the hot topic: "Reports that development for Final Fantasy Versus XIII is on hold are false. The truth of the situation is that when free, some staff from the Versus team have been helping with the XIII team on development of Final Fantasy XIII. Development for both titles is continuing as originally scheduled."
