I think the AFI might have done a list for horror by itself in the past.  That's the only possible reason they would have skipped it.

I think they must be running out of lists to do, lol.

I was watching some of this on TV and was trying to figure out if Lawrence of Arabia qualified when they were listing the Epic movies.

They are pretty loose about what they qualify as American.  The Third Man is as American as any of the big Leone spaghetti westerns.

True, though I still think they left off the Leone films for that reason.  The Third Man was on their top 100 back in the day.

These lists, especially with the AFI, are basically about what's considered important in the film canon and needs to be represented.  This one is particularly awkward with the labels to boot.

They botched the Westerns, the Animation one proves how thin animated features have been in this country, Mystery shafts film noirs by making them split a category with Hitchcock thrillers, and Fantasy is just all over the damn place.

I think the AFI should do a series of middlebrow documentaries on better-defined genres, sort of a Behind the Music level thing where they can give people a run down of older and foreign stuff they wouldn't look at otherwise.

Several picks there make me want to vomit on these people.  Shrek has no place anywhere near the top 10 animation.  No Gattaca in the top 10 is disgusting.  Western is just all kinds of shit.  Gangster is actually pretty good.

I have a huge soft spot for Breaking Away, so I was glad to see it make the sports list.  Field of Dreams shouldn't be anywhere, but I'm glad they stuck it in fantasy to avoid placing it higher than Bull Durham in sports, which would be a travesty.

L.A. Confidential should have been the modern mystery representative instead of Usual Suspects.  The Big Sleep should be there too.

Annie Hall should be the #1 romantic comedy.  Eternal Sunshine, The Goodbye Girl, The Thin Man, and A Night At The Opera should all be on that list.  I'm fudging the criteria on those last two, but Sleepless in Seattle!?  I think Roman Holiday is waaaay overrated, and I've got a big retro-crush on Audrey Hepburn.  Why not Sabrina?

Kind of surprised that Inherit the Wind didn't make the courtroom drama list.  Haven't seen enough of those movies to bitch about it though.

Although I totally respect older films from past generations, they personally do nothing for me, and most of the lists are comprised of them.

There are few exceptions like Lawrence of Arabia, Bonnie & Clyde, etc., that still stand up to this day (imo).

good to see AFI recognize that Fellowship was the best LOTR movie.

come on, did you really expect them to list any spaghetti westerns? at least the director of the Third Man could speak english.

Maybe to be qualified, at least one of the producers has to be American?
