I played the DS import a lot, but I bought the PSP version yesterday after playing the demo.  I say the PSP version is better if only for the much better screen, how crisp it looks, and no stupid dual screen shit that the DS version has.

Normally it doesn't, but Boss Battles and bonus stages use both screens.  It does dual screen better than most games because you can adjust the delay between the screens, but it still is lame.  DS version is only worth picking up over the PSP version if you own the paddle, but you would have to import that and breaks the game and high score and things like that aren't counted when using it.

They are essentially the same game, but the DS version has a different soundtrack (by Zuntata) and online play.  The PSP version does not.  A lot of people have a preference for the DS version because of the music; it's good but I think the PSP version sounds better.  I find that I do play it more on the DS though.

agreed

but does the space between the screens act like a base? like, i mean, do the invaders zoom right to you if they get past that? that'd be awesome

I downloaded both, and the PSP version is superior in every way except for the soundtrack. I haven't heard of the guy that did the DS's score, but his work is fuckawesome. Why didn't both games have the same soundtrack? The PSP's sounds dull in comparison. :(

I am playing both right now, but the DS's two screen set-up sure blows for boss battles.

I got the DS edition today.

hahah putting different soundtracks on each game was brill - why? because it makes the game worth double dipping.....if you start with one edition, the other edition is like a SIE - REMIX - all new music and different feel makes it feel like just MORE of the asskicking gameplay you already enjoyed on the other system.

Its not the same game at all. I now own both and im all bricked up over it.

DOUBLE DIP NOW!

Also the music in the DS edition is a bit more dynamic - changing pace more during a break and hyper mode along with special music for boss battles.....

any section that involves both screens kinda sucks, except for the stage 3 boss battle which feels more claustrophobic on the DS. The bonus shooting sections to initiate hyper mode all use both screens also - just like in contra IV its fucking annoying to try to track stuff between both screens as if they were one screen...

Its badass to play it on the DS and then later see it on the PSP screen.

This is what Himuro chooses not to share with us:

Quote
Impressions:

- The game has no bases like in traditional Space Invaders, kinda like Majestic Twelve.

- The game is a mix between Space Invaders sequels Space Invaders '91 (Majestic Twelve) and Space Invaders '95.

- Similarly to SI95, there's more variety in the types of invaders, they have distinct attack patterns rather than simply shooting you as they head for your bases, although this game doesn't have bases, so it's not nearly as *interesting* as SI95 either. In this game enemy attacks are much harder to avoid.

- Enemy variety is absolutely crazy. Some invaders hide behind each other, so sometimes when you think you're fighting one invader, they'll come out and reveal their true form. Some invaders shoot incredibly FAST pew pews at you that can be hard to dodge in the middle of the action. Enemies will shoot giant ass lasers at you. Some enemies have shields that block against certain types of attacks, some wear armor so you have to shoot them multiple times in order to kill them. It's quite versatile.

- Borrowing from Space Invaders 95 are Bonus Rounds which each have specific goals, such as shooting 8 UFO's before the time runs out, shooting one specific hard to reach UFO, or shooting as many invaders as you can before the time runs out. They can be challenging sometimes, but not too much. You initiate bonus rounds either shooting UFO's that sparkle black, yellow, red and whatever else or through Gold UFOs and shooting the bonus round ticket. After every successful bonus round you earn Fever Time, where you become more powerful for an alloted time. Earning points through bonus rounds seems key.

- There's a row and column system implemented now which is detrimental to success and earning points. Shooting an entire column of Blue Invaders for instance, yields a laser drop. You earn 1000 extra points for shooting the column as well. Do this in succession and you can start racking points.

- The game has multiple bullet types, which, as far as I know is new to the series. There is a big blue laser - my favorite - which decimates anything in its path, there is a green spread bullet type which allows you to hit multiple rows/columns at once, allowing to get some crowd control, and finally there's a bomb bullet which destroys any invaders within its vicinity. Each bullet type has its benefits and can be used for a specific amount of time.

- When you shoot your PEW PEWS there's a musical note that pops up. Very Rez-ish. As you shoot in the game you make awesome sounding music.

- The music in electronic based, with fast paced beats. It's quite a spectacular sounding soundtrack and I need it.

- The game has multiple paths, in a very Darius sort of way, except you can't choose which path you can go as far as I know. I don't even know what unlocks certain paths.

- The difficulty isn't as hard as import impressions lead me to believe, but it's still decent. That said, I've had a harder time with Space Invaders 95 which is easily the easiest SI i've played up to this point...until now that is. That said, invaders will surprise you. They fall right from the screen straight to you at times without warning, even when they're not alone . The just sorta do it. Bosses can are impeccable. Extremely well made boss fights which, although they are all based on the same premise. Level 3's boss in particular was pretty fun.

- The game's real difficulty comes in the come of its score ranking system. I was managed to beat level 2 without getting hit once, I did all the bonus rounds I could find, I hit gold UFO's, and I scored a rank D.

- Replayability seems high. This one will last you a while if you're a fan of this type of thing.

I got the psp version. I'm pretty sure the ds version is identical aside from the music, but the music in the psp version is absolutely amazing. Someone put the song for level 3 on youtube.

For the price of 20 dollars you can't beat this. Support this game. If you're a fan of Space Invaders you owe yourself to check this game out, it's a worthy entry to one of the best 2d shooter series ever.

i play single credit games (the way all real men play shooters) without continuing.

The end result is that you get stronger at the game - not just good at surviving it.

I play one game of it on the DS and then one PSP round. Its the best times iv had on handhelds recently. I hate when handheld games try too hard to be console titles. I prefer lite addictive budgetware.

What really makes the DS soundtrack come out on top is the damn dynamic game mood music. Putting your ship in the top screen for the roulette is cool, and the 2 screen announcements with countdowns "Boss 3...2...1..." etc are better on the DS.

You get much more up close and personal with the stage 1 boss on the PSP screen for example because the PSP's short and wide screen pushes him down in yer face....unfortunately the stage 3a boss isnt as menacing on the PSP as it is on the DS - they have to reduce the dual bosses size by 50% almost it seems to fit their rotation pattern on the PSP screen. where as on the DS the dual bosses are gigantic things that fly within 10 pixels of the nose of yer ship.

It ends up being kinda like the stage one boss on PSP vs DS. wide short screen vs tall narrow screen ;)

you have to pay attention to what you are shooting to get the rank up. picking off the same shapes , colours, rows, getting "perfect shooting" etc all help.

yeah f that for now, I just want to survive.
