It's solid. The combat gets a lot better as you go along and you can set the AI for the other two characters.

The story is typical jappa rpg shit, but the game is worth playing.

If you could stomach Grandia, you can probably make your way through ToS.  Personally I stopped somewhere around the halfway mark.  Not that great, imo.

Nothing like Baten Kaitos btw.

the battle system is entertaining for a while, but everything else made me take a vow to never buy a Tales game again. The characters are absolutely terrible, the voice acting is head-ache inducing (I turned it off after 5 minutes) and the story is made for inferior beinnnggs.

Tales of the Abyss is better. But Tales of Symphonia is better than Tales of Legendia.

I hope Tales of Vesperia is better than Tales of the Abyss.

and contrary to what people say, tales of the abyss is not better than symphonia. abyss is watered down from everything in symphonia. from the characters to the dungeons to the sidequests.

I didn't get very far in this game, I think I beat the first boss or two and that's about it.  Seemed pretty shit to me, overhyped waste of money  :maf
Characters were agonizing and combat was a bore that was also somehow difficult, so no fun for me.

You might enjoy it though, RPGs are worth the gamble at low prices, because when you find one that clicks you can get a lot of value out of it.

abyss has far better battles and boss fights, and better dungeons to boot. symphonia has these horrible little affairs with nonsensical puzzles. also, himu, you fop, how the fuck can you defend symphonia's characters? each one is like a perfect, crystalline, fully natured turd of an animu cliche -- from the stupid lead to the mana princess to the precocious genius to the emo ninja girl to the arch teacher to the amnesiac to the bishie fan service to the monotone loli. colette in particular is like the most horribly emasculating THING ever to happen to rpgs. it is blandness typefied.

abyss has technical issues, but at least it has a fuck amazing battle system with challenging encounters. symphonia is just button mashing nonsense.

ToS is one of those games that I feel moderately dirty for enjoying.  The story and characters are to blame.  The gameplay is button mashin' fun imo.  Drinky, as usual is right tho- Tales of the Abyss is muy grande better.  ToS gets attention because it's a japafag rpg on the shamecube.  It's certainly adequate to waste some time with, just don't let anyone see you doing it unless you're a shameful animu fanthing like Himumu.

The game is fun. I loved the graphics, battle system, and the music. That's enough for me in an rpg (all the Grandia games own). Colette is the worst thing about the game. Easily my most hated jrpg character ever.

I actually got all the way through Symphonia, which I don't do all that often in recent years. Strange thing about it is, I can barely remember it at all. I remember it being vaguely about the evils of ethnic cleansing/profiling?  ???

I remember the characters being bland, even for cliches. All I really remember about the main character (Lloyd) was that he wore an awful red jacket that I wanted to change for pretty much the entire game.

It was decently fun though, in a mindless grind-y way. I thought it was common knowledge that the only reason it ever amassed a following was that it was the only RPG on the cube for a while.

It was the GC's WILD ARMs.

really? i've played 40 hours of abyss so far and haven't died once. I died a couple of times in symphonia because some fights actually required strategy.

at least symphonia doesn't use distinguished mentally-challenged moon speak gibberish to try and sound deep and the dungeons are FAR better.

Not to mention, Abyss is linear as fuck, with a terrible world map, terrible sidequests and even then it's impossible to even do the sidequests without a fucking guide because they're so easily missable. ToS had points where you could branch out, explore, and do secret stuff or side stuff or whatever. Abyss in on fucking rails.

It really isn't. In fact, it's worse in a lot of cases. Symphonia knew what it was: a c level rpg and it treated itself like such. Abyss tries to make it sound deep and shit and it is some of the most pretentious shit ever. The seventh phonon of the qliphoth? What's that? "you mean you don't knowwwww?!"

Fuck this game wants me to piss on its dvd case.

And yeah, ToD is the best Tales. People putting abyss on a pedestal has me shaking my head.

i didn't hate tos overall -- it's a fun diversion, even if it drags on way too long. but preferring its plot/characters over abyss'? that's some wack shit. abyss may be packed with nonsense, and in the end, it may a purely academic distinction, but abyss is far better developed as a wacky jappy animu experience than symphonia's bottom-of-the-bug-eye-barrel drivel.

as for the "fonons of the qliphoth" nonsense -- it's just another jappy abuse of the big-Q Qabbalah (the post-Judaist variety) mythos. you'll put up with this in SMT titles; no reason to get worked up over it now.

I enjoyed ToS for the first 13 hours or so. The storyline is pretty engaging (as it leads you by the nose from tower to tower) but after the "event", it quickly spirals into nothingness. Just boring filler after that until you submit and give up.

While the combat is cool at first, there is no substance behind it. The game is so easy that you can use just about any of the moves and have relative success.

But when you look at the options for a traditional RPG on the Gamecube, you can tell why it gets mentioned.

Guilty admission- I actually fired up ToS this past weekend again to see what the game+ experience was like.  Unfortunately for me, it's EXACTLY WHAT I WANT in a game+:  using the grade you accumulated, you can beef up your characters for another run through.  So I'm wasting time with another playthrough until my DS shows up and then I can plunge into Etrian Odyssey II hardcore.

You know what, I think that both Abyss' and Symphonia's positives cancel each other out... While Abyss beats Symphonia in terms of characters, story, and battle system (love the free movement)... Symphonia was executed much better technically (almost zero load times,  much cleaner graphics). But how could anybody defend Abyss' dungeons? They almost all looked the same and most didn't have much in the way of puzzles. Puzzles in dungeons make the Tales games, for me. Only a few were satisfying, namely the laaarge radiation gate dungeon. Boss fights in Abyss were extremely easy, apart from the first time you meet Legretta, and of course the secret boss... whom I came so close to beating, but then never went back to beat.

I haven't played Legendia but I want to, just to see what kind of a trainwreck it is.
