Kung Fu Panda is excellent

i'm not kidding

go see it

at night

when there aren't kids

seriously

it's really really well done and is no more goofy than something like Kung Fu Hustle

plus the fights are EXCELLENTLY done.

damn straight

the film has FANTASTIC fight choreography ... I was totally impressed by pretty much all of the major battles

the scene where

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Furious Five work together to stop Tai Lung
[close]

is completely awesome

it's easily, far and away, the best non-pixar CG movie. It also has some awesome 2D sequences (really)

All non-pixar CGI movies are shit.

not true

Surf's Up is pretty good. more importantly, it doesn't just settle for "lol talking animals (Ice Age, Madagascar)" or thoughtlessly ape the Pixar style

Surf's Up is a clever mockumentary take on the animated film. and Kung Fu Panda is like a wuxia wet dream. it's clear the people making it weren't going to let the fact that it was a children's movie keep it from being TOTALLY KICK ASS

I told Himuro I was open to seeing this and he said it was a piece of shit. Park it next to GTA4 when weighing his opinion on something.

Beezy was an uncle, an uncle growing up in the hood.  What could he possibly offer his poor sick nephew besides crack, teen pregnancy and aids?  Hope and Kung Fu Panda.  You see Beezy didn't realize it at the time, but that hope, coupled with Kung Fu Panda, was what would give his nephew the drive to make something out of himself and eventually become the first black president.  I salute you Beezy, for keeping it real, in da hood.  :pimp

My wife wants to see this so this makes it easier for me to go see.  Ty babies. :heartbeat

pixar has been remaking the same movie for years

"Oh I'm a maladjusted misfit living in an authoritarian, systematic society. Everyone acts the same, but I think for myself! I'm going to go on an adventure and in the end everyone will realize I've been right all along!"

smh. I haven't seen Kung Fu Panda but I bet it's better than Cars, Finding Nemo, Ratatoie, Monsters Inc, and A Bug's Life

So yeah, I'm taking my nephew to see this tomorrow. I wish we could also watch Iron Man, but I know he would fall asleep during a 2nd movie. Plus movie theaters are cold and I don't want him to get sick again.

Edit: I saw Ratatouille (learn to spell PD) for the first time on cable 2 weeks ago. It's better than I thought it would be. Wish I could see it in HD though...

The 2D opening scene was awesome, rest of the movie: shit. Sorry, but this one sucked, as all non-Pixar 3D films do. And yes, I've read the thread.

The fight scenes were shit, especially since the sound mixing was distinguished mentally-challenged and the punches made no sound effects. Add physical comedy that wears thin after the first 5 minutes of the movie is through, as well as metaphors about as deep as a rain puddle.

The magic behind Pixar is much more than the quality of animation and art, it's the writing. Every single Pixar film manages to fit in both children and adult humor without going to far in either direction, but keeping it subtle.

The writing in Kung Fu Panda was fucking distinguished mentally-challenged. To compare the film to Kung Fu Hustle is also absurd, since with Hustle you get Stephen Chow, a comedic champ, and with Kung Fu Panda you just get bad writing, forgettable characters and music, and a strange taste in your mouth.

EDIT: smh @ PD

that doesn't fit monsters inc. at all, never mind that nobody over 12 watches these 3D cartoons for the plot anyway

Yeah.  Monsters, Inc is all about how the exploitation of the proletariat by the haute bourgoisie.  Steve Buscemi's envy of John Goodman is a result of workers being alienated from each other, and they terrify children because they're alienated from the act of production.  Finally the idealized worker-hero revolts against his master and seizes the means of production.

Shit, no wonder you like the movie.  It's basically Sots Art.

Agreed. I was expecting a typical CG DreamWorks crapfest, but I thought it was really good, and the fight scenes were very well done.

Also,

Jackie Chan = Monkey :o

Angelina and Lucy Liu = Tigress and Snake :o

I was unaware of this the entire movie.  :lol

There aren't THAT many good non-Pixar CGI flicks, but they're out there.  Like hey, here's one.

French made, B&W(hardly any gray) sci-fi noir, it looks great and doesn't suck.  Also has a very good, very natural English dub.

They should hand out awards for this. But there are good non-pixar animated movies.

To who? The banned or the admin who banned?

And yes there are non-pixar animated films that can be good, but Kung Fu Panda is not one of them. And you'll have to excuse that I broke a personal rule I set for myself: to judge Pixar films only against other Pixar films, since my bias weighs heavy (lul no wai).

Without the action sequences this would be a pretty run of the mill CG movie.  It hews closer to the formula PD describes than anything Pixar has done, and the voice acting and dialogue isn't anything special.

But those action sequences...  oh em gee.  After this and the Incredibles, how long until a studio makes a straight up CG action movie?

It seems like a certain 1up.com editor in chief got caught up in the Pixar circle-jerk.

http://www.1up.com/do/blogEntry?bId=8786393&publicUserId=4549175

Sorry, but I don't want to be lectured about rampant consumerism- in a Disney film, no less!- and yet, I know that the Academy Award for best animated film will, as usual, devolve into the annual "Let's give Pixar ANOTHER Award!" award. Kung Fu Panda is so much more deserving of the award, IMHO. At least the trailers for Panda didn't turn me off over the film...

I've not seen Kung Fu Panda and I probably will go watch it.

I can guarantee you right now that I won't like it better than Wall-E. I don't have enough praise for that film. I could write a four page review and not express how much I liked it.
