no fucking j-pop or j-rock or gackt or anime music.   just had to put that out there :-*

I feel like I've been stuck on the same japanese and japanese-related bands forever:
--Melt Banana
--Boris
--Deerhoof (japanese singer)
--Blonde Redhead (japanese singer)
--Boredoms
--OOIOO
--Satanicpornocultshop

I still listen to these bands on a daily basis, but this has been going on for about 5 years now! I can only get away with not looking stale because nobody knows any of these groups. :lol

Help me break the cycle EB!  (I'm copypasta-ing this to gaf too, so if you see it there, that's me.)

Cha-Cha - Ai Takahashi

I have been listening to 77Boadrums and Re-Bore vols. 1 and 2 for a week straight.  When I'm tired of those, I put in Seadrum/House of Sun.

UA, a singer-songwriter, is more poppy, but still experimental. She has a lot of different styles - jazz, dub, dance, rock, pop.  You won't hear her lumped in with every other cookie-cutter JPop artist. She's more comparable to Bjork.  The project AJICO she was in was pretty straight-ahead grungy rock with a lot of soul.

I like YMO's oldschool synthpop a lot. Their first two albums are required listening and massively influential.  Definitely check out Susumu Hirasawa and his band from around YMO's time called P-Model.

POLYSICS are pretty poppy, and kind of inconsistent, but they have a ton of catchy, enthusiastic guitar/electro hooks.

Nujabes is a fantastic hip-hop DJ who does some instrumental stuff and works with a lot of Western MCs.

Susumu Yokota, an electronic musician, is a little inconsistent too, but he has some beautiful albums. Check out Symbol and Sakura. Oh, also his collaboration with Rothko, Distant Sounds of Summer.

Is there a good recording of 77Boadrums out there?  I've seen some bootlegs around, nothing that comes close to capturing the sound.  Not that it's easy to capture 77 drummers arranged in a spiral in a park in the middle of Brooklyn :lol   I wish I could've been there  :-\

The one I have (check Rapidsearch on 4chan) is as close as anyone's probably going to get, if it's not official. It's in stereo, it's got multiple mics, there's panning, it's professionally mixed, etc.  Naturally, all those cymbals don't sound the best given the venue and the equipment used, but it sounds pretty good, considering.

Man, it would've been badass to be there.

I'll go grab that, thanks for the heads up!   My friend went. He even had a hook up and got in to a great spot at the park without waiting much in line (apparently tons of people got shut out.)  I was gonna go...FUCKING SUMMER SCHOOL. I try not to think about it. :lol

Smile is fucking awesome.  protip: the japanese version is like a completely different album.  a bit more mellow, but worth checking out.

they're playing a non-Pitchfork Fest show in Chicago...just like I wished for!
got my tix this mornin'
