Hey folks, Harry here - Some days when I open up my mail, I literally feel like the luckiest son of a bitch to draw a breath. In the last couple of weeks - Quentin Tarantino sat down with Enzo Castellari to do an interview with Enzo regarding his awesome exploitation Men on a Mission film... INGLORIOUS BASTARDS... yes, the same title as the film that Tarantino is apparently set to be making soon.
Now - there's been some movement on this project at long last. Quentin has been writing on it for over 6 years. And it was always about to be his next film. We've heard casting from Arnold, Sly & Bruce to Tim Roth, Sam Jackson, John Travolta and on and on and on... We've had interviews from those personalities talking about talking about talking with Quentin about the movie... but what's the real story?

Well at Cannes - Quentin began talking a bit about how he was set to start shooting. And yet - when? Where? What?

It seems years ago at Venice - Quentin sat Enzo Castellari down and discussed INGLORIOUS BASTARDS with him. And watched Enzo's film for the first time on the big screen. He'd seen it a few times as a younger man on Channel 5 - a mythical magical station that apparently ruled the known universe. I never had Channel 5. I had parents with friends with tons of 16mm film prints. I'm not complaning.

This interview is meant for Severin Films' DVD release of Enzo Castellari's INGLORIOUS BASTARDS and was conducted in Quentin's home in Los Angeles, where he was hosting Enzo during his stay in Los Angeles.

The first big thing we learn is that Quentin has been writing almost non-stop on INGLORIOUS BASTARDS - and that the premise is the basic jumping off point from Enzo's original - that you had a bunch of hardened criminals on a military transport during World War II - that got ambushed by the Nazis. Everyone but the criminals gets killed and the prisoners decide to make their way to neutral Switzerland - and must fight the Nazis and the Allies to get there. It's a true No Man's Land scenario.

Well, as Quentin has been writing this - he's done so much research into the actual events of World War II as well as the cinema of World War 2 - that the story kept growing and growing. It became too big for one film - so he's turned it into 2. That's right, INGLORIOUS BASTARDS will be two movies... not unlike KILL BILL.

So that's the big news that I found from the interview.

In addition - the casting we've all heard for all these years... wasn't casting, but conversations that Quentin has had, that have grown to mythic levels. For the first time, Quentin has decided not to write for the voice of actors he's decided to cast in advance. He felt that one can do that, but then they're limiting what they feel an actor can do with the part. He's decided to write the characters with no specific actor in mind. To allow the character to be everything that character can be and to actually find an actor to become that character. What a novel notion.

The opening sequence of Quentin's film is apparently going to be something extraordinary - as Enzo Castellari was geeking out big time just thinking about what Quentin had told him. Classic.

Also - during the interview - as Quentin began talking about Enzo's use of Slow Motion - Enzo's enthusiasm for the technique all but convinced Quentin to stage what he has called a sequence in his film - as an epic slow motion scene - but he was still debating it.

This is a great interview between these two - Quentin and Enzo talking about Fred Williamson is simply classic. The interview is nearly 40 minutes and very entertaining. It'll also be a great preview of where Quentin is beginning with his next project. The dvd comes out July 29th in a special 3 DVD edition. The film is a jewel. Really something special. i thought death proof was just as amazing an experience as PF. The dialogue wasn't better, but the suspense was probably better in DP than PF, and definitely better than RD. Once thing I love about early Tarantino is the way he handled suspense.

The whole "split into two parts" thing has been done and now that every major blockbuster film is a trilogy, quadrilogy, or some shit, it is really old now.

I'll probably skip this one.  Tarantino just doesn't do it for me anymore.  He had some interesting ideas in the 90s but he has barely moved on since then.  I expect IB to be a lot like his other films, with the exception that I won't be seeing this one, whereas I saw all the others.  Jackie Brown was good but not what his fans wanted so everyone loves to shit on the movie.  It is better than Grind House and Kill Bill.

tarantino's definitely made some good movies but his personality is a bit hard to judge since he's been REALLY drunk in every one of his interviews.  The dialogue in his movies is the type you that either really like or hate.  However, most people agree that Resorvoir Dogs is a good movie.

i think vol 1 is wayyyy better than volume 2 and I love volume 2.
 
Volume 1 is more styish. Volume has cool anime scenes. Volume 1 has Ren cutting off some dude's head because he hates she's american or chinese or whatever. Volume 2 has Gogo and that dude with the nasty teef. Volume 1 has the mask dude. Volume 1 has Charlie Brown. Volume 1 has a knife fight in the kitchen, it also has Buck, the pussy wagon, and a bunch of memorable moments. Volume 2 is like...uhhh fight in desert -> buried alive -> awesome fight with crazy bitch -> boring ass fight with bill

death proof is not better than pulp fiction.  but for purely selfish masturbatory reasons, i like it more.  although i can concede it's not the better film

pei mei alone is better than anything in volume 1.  i hate the anime scenes.  ren was annoying and the restaurant battle lasts way too long.  the only cool thing was the cinematography.  the actual fight with ren is much better.  gogo is hot but a lot of the crazy 88 shit could have been edited out.  volume 1 has the superior opening scene though

As for DP, it's the way the movie is handled. In the theatre version, you think Kurt Russel is just some normal dude and then you realize he's a freak when he takes away that blonde in the car. It was so fucking effective. In the dvd release, they show foreshadowing and Kurt acting like a stalker, which ruins the mood.

It was really well made if you enjoy suspence/thriller movies. The movie just has people conversing and shit and you get to like the characters and then Tarantino just kills them off. You'd think Butterfly survives because the movie insinuates she's the main character next to Julia. But no, she gets fuck owned by a tire. Usually in suspense movies, there are a few survivors. Death Proof does away with this cliche entirely, and you see the murderer move on to another group of girls. You now know what he's like, so the movie develops these girls, as you see Kurt Russel tail and stalk them. And then the movie entirely has you gripping your seat as they do that amazing car chase and you think Zoe is dead, but no that bitch is alive and they grab a piece of wood with Zoe hanging out the side of the car at 80 mph for fucking REVENGE and it's ON. Kurt Russel turns from cold, hardened man to a little BITCH and it's the most genius thing I've seen in a while.

And the ending shot is genius.

I think DP succeeds at its goal more than Pulp did. Such an amazing suspense movie with no cg, no bullshit, just stunts and REAL SHIT.

I agree with all this. I expected someone to survive the first attack and was shocked when they all died like an afterthought. Lots of cliches are thrown out the window. Even the doomed group of chicks didn't fit the normal "slasher female victim" descriptions. They were all independent women who didn't fall for shit. And the second group was even more independent.

DP is a solid 8 movie for me. It's too campy to be anything more, despite the cool barrier breaking

Outside of the campy nature, I really didn't like some of the early female dialogue, which is basically QT trying too damn hard. He's praised for his realistic, conversational dialogue but that shit doesn't sound natural at all, and I'm sorry but girls don't talk like that. I'm not saying girls aren't witty - I liked that aspect of the dialogue. But it just goes over board after awhile.

Pulp is just a great movie to me. I've never been a fan of the Travolta/Thurmann dancing and shit but the rest of the movie is solid. Dogs is better though

I think that if Death Proof's dialogue were on par with Pulp's it'd be a better movie. But Pulp has so much going for it. More memorable scenes, more memorable characters, dialogue you can quote for an eternity, excellent story that has you asking questions throughout, non conventional narrative structure, subtle hints to the story that add to the experience the more you watch..

death proof is just a great movie that was my movie of the year last year (yeah, I enjoyed it more than There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men). But it's not even approaching one of my favorite movies ever yet. Pulp however was one of my favorite movies after watching it *once*.

As for Dogs...that's an another excellent film. So is Jackie Brown.

Kill Bill volume 1 and 2 are easily the weakest in his director roles, and I think most famous directors would kill for movies of that quality to be their worst, since KB 1 and 2 are legitimately well made, entertaining movies that know what they are. They don't try to be high art and they don't need to be.
