Skype - on PSP but not PS3 WTF?
« on: June 23, 2008, 12:08:11 AM »
Why isnt skype also on PS3?

Further - why doesn't Sony just use Skype's network/codec for in game voip conferences?

It's a third party - they'd have to pay license fees.
Plus, I doubt skype is reliable enough for in-game chat.

Wow - so skype's proprietary voIP codec rivals most of the G.711 and G.729 SIP codecs carriers use.

Most Tier 1 carriers such as British Telecom, AT&T, Global Crossing, etc use SBC and gateways that one day dream of being as impressive as skypes proprietary VoIP codec.

Skype would make the client for PS3 to service their paying users. For some reason they have Skype for PSP but not PS3...

XBL's VoIP codecs are a shitstain on a prison wall compared to Skype.

Safe Harbor was brill for buying Skype - they very well could become the global dominating carrier for VoIP/TDM call origination and termination services by 2015.

I've been using Skype for conference chats between myself and two buddies, on who lives on the other side of the world. This is our preferred in-game chat software (with the ones built into the games, we have to set each game up and login / logout, which is a hassle). We have never had any sort of connection or communication problem using Skype.

At my company we have a Cisco ICM deployment with Cisco call manager and Cisco desktop phones....

I say fuck all of that and just use my macbook air in the office as my phone.

I have used it commercially for over 90 days with maybe one fucked up call.

Everyone else is tied to their desk phone for their calls....I can go anywhere, plug some earbuds into my macbook air and use the built in isight cam as my mic...not one person I have been talking to has ever asked if im on some kind of VoIP softphone.

The call handling features - flawless

I pay $10/month for unlimited global outbound dialing and $20/year for an inbound number.

Some of my friends pay $2.99 month for the unlimited US and Canada plan.

Skype >>>>>> Cellphone

Now put the damn thing on my PS3.

Yeah, Skype kicks a lot of ass. And it not being available on the PS3 sucks just as much ass.

Most people with a PS3 likely have a fucking telephone near by. The same can't be said for when you're not at fucking home.

I have a cellphone for domestic calling, but use Skype for all international calling, which in my case is needed for business purposes, and for staying in touch with friends and family. Having it on PS3 would make things a hell of a lot smoother.

Captain Obvious: Because the PS3 is a half-assed cobbled-together platform and the PSP actually had some thought put into it.

On the topic of inconsistency in game consoles and chat, what I don't get is why Xbox Live has voice chat as a pay feature, supports Live Messenger text chatting, but will not interface Live Messenger FREE video or voice chat with XBL's paid service. If I'm paying money for voice and video chat, why can't I use it?
