I think. Turned it on, and I was greeted with a weird start-up; what looks like quite a few broken pixels across the screen, and then it hangs on the user select screen, or before it. Is the system toast? I don't know what in the hell could have happened, we had some distant thunder today, but I haven't noticed any power surges.

It definitely has the earmark of a fried system, although I don't know how exactly that happened. At first I thought it was just a typical system freeze (recently released firmware, you know), but the behavior has been consistent. FUCK. I fucking hate this generation.

That's a new policy then; I'm pretty sure the return policy I have features very few limitations. I could be wrong though, I'll have to look into it. And I'd sooner let the system rot than pay Sony to repair a system that it built that just upped and died.

And to be fair, the system lasted 3x as long as my first 360, and about twice as long as my second 360. Still, with this now being proven to be a doucheworthy console, I'm not sure I'll keep the replacement. If only Sucker Punch and Insomniac weren't exclusive to the PS3.

I think I solved the mystery here. When hooking the PS3 back up and putting it back in its spot, I noticed a fucking Care Bear plush behind the system. I'm thinking that might have blocked the exhaust vents, causing the thing to temporarily overheat. Well, I hope that's it.

Isn't there some sort of failsafe against overheating though? I was under the impression that the system would shut itself off if it reached a certain heat level. Or am I just assuming that it will have the same safeguards as a computer?

It's a fucking pain in the ass to find information about this on the web. Same thing as when I researched the RROD when that happened, it's damned near impossible to find good information as the channels are fucking clogged with blogs and message board posts made by fanboys for or against one system or the other who seem to consider it their life mission to either deny the issues or exaggerate them to hell and back. Idiots.

Not if the system still detects itself as functioning.  A modern videocard will shut itself off it gets too hot but it could start having artifacts even before reaching that point.

It's likely a similar thing happened to your PS3.  I wouldn't worry if the system works again.  A little overheating usually doesn't cause permanent damage.

It's perfectly possible to fry a PC CPU or video card too though - too little silicon gel or a busted fan and whoosh, up they go. It can happen too fast for the safeguards to kick in.

Anyway, glad to hear yours is back to life. Hopefully there is no permanent damage.

Duckman's artifacts sound like the ones that happen when a videocard is overclocked a bit too much.  It's no big deal if the PS3's working again.

The motherfucker did it again. 3 times in a week now. Room temperature has never gone above 74, and the last time it froze it had been running idle for like 20 minutes.

Sounds like there's some permanent damage to the GPU or ram.  Modern hardware should definitely function properly at 74 degrees. 

My room temp is 86 or above and my PC never crashes.  Don't tell them about blocking the exhaust though if you call tech support.  They might blame the problems on that even though a system is supposed to shut down if it gets too hot.

That bear shouldn't have been able to cause it in the first place, though. It's a mini-plush, and was only leaning against a small portion of the exhaust vent. Not that it matters, I certainly wouldn't mention it any way. It's going to be a pain in the ass though; it was purchased using someone elses Costco account. Good thing it's all dry on the PS3 front until November.

If you don't mind no BC with the new models, why not let your friend try returning it at Costco?  Anything that was bought before they changed their electronic returns policy to 3 months, is still under the old policy and can be returned easily.

Yeah, that'd be the plan. The weird thing about this whole deal is that it never happens while playing a game. I've put in several consecutive hours of Burnout Paradise and COD4, with no crashes or other signs of instability. It only seems to occur when it's idle.

I didn't start bitching about the 360 until I ran into the denial patrol. Microsoft's bullshit moves towards accessory dependency and having a second system crap out didn't help, but most of my nerd rage regarding the 360 stems from that denial bullshit. Call sony.  Back your shit up now while it still works, and deactivate it through account management so you don't lose anything and you don't eat an account activation on a dead system.

WORST case scenario, you call sony and get an out of warranty replacement for like 150$.  A buddy of mine had his dic drive give out and did this, took about 2 weeks, not even, and got a replacement (60gb launch unit btw).
