Battlefield: Bad Company (anyone get it)
« on: June 24, 2008, 10:07:49 PM »
I just got my copy tonight and am about to jump online.  Any of you guys get it?  I fell in love with the demo... probably spent like 10+ hours in it and it was just a single map.  The multi-player is so addictive and awesome.  It's nice to play a MP game that's very team-oriented in play style rather than individualist. It's not like COD4 at all. If you didn't like the demo, give it another shot, and then another one.  I've seen a lot of posts on the xbox.com forums saying "At first I hated it, but now I love it".  Shit grows on you. Anyway, let me know @ HIPPO SMASH on Xbox live if you ever wanna throw down.

I played the beta, I played the 360 demo and I played the PS3 demo.  They all sucked.  My love for the Battlefield games couldn't blind me enough to play it.

The basic controls are poor.  The FOV is way too close.  The voice acting is somewhere between Haze and Army of Two.  Other random stupid decisions like making your screen go dark when you lose health, yet the game doesn't have recharging health, so if you are playing multiplayer and have a sliver of health yet, you have to constantly be looking through this annoying filter they put over it.  Same for vehicles with the constant beeping.  It is almost like DICE thought that console gamers were baboons that were dropped as babies and couldn't figure this shit out on their own, so they need to throw it in your face as much as possible.

Those are pretty weak complaints, though.  Controls work great for me.  Some people complained about the vehicle controls but if you just change it to Type 2 in the options menu, it's 10x better (left stick becomes throttle/brake).  On foot controls are precise and easy to use.  Not much different than any other random FPS.

As far as the voice acting, that's just the single-player.  90% of my time will be in multi-player so that ain't an issue for me (didn't think the VA was bad anyway).

I downloaded the demo expecting to like this, and maybe even buy it.

Liked a lot of what I saw, but for God knows what reason they chose this terrible FOV (field of view) and it makes me motion sick within seconds.  Only a handful of games have EVER done this to me, and this game is one of them.  Very weird, as I play FPS games all the time without a problem.

Stupid fuck developers somehow screw up the most basic of shit sometimes.  Fix it and I'll consider a purchase.

I hate any system that makes a game harder the worse a player does.  Seems like this is a pass.
I'm not following you...what do you mean?

Ehh, you can still see.  I think it kinda adds some realism because you shouldn't be as adept at combat when your life is hanging by a thread.  And really, when you have health that low (<10), you're probably dead in a few seconds anyway.

I dunno, I'm head over heels for this game.  Just wish I could connect to a game. :lol  There's major connection issues today.  I guess their servers are getting hammered.

It is pretty evident that this game has no intention of being realistic.  Sticking a recharging needle into your chest to heal gunshot wounds isn't exactly something used in real life.  And no, there have been many times in the Beta/Demo that I had low health and was still alive for a long time.  I'm talking upwards of 5 minutes.  They should have had the needle in multiplayer, except have a very slow recharge time with it.  I hear you could unlock it or something, but that is just another dumb idea that will separate skill from having too much time to play the damn game.

And the aiming sucks.  CoD4 and UT3 are two games that got aiming right on consoles (as right as they can be on a standard controller).  Instead developers copying them, you usually see them going with their own idea of how the controls should be, and usually they turn out to be ass like BFBC.  They are either too fast or too slow.  It may not be a problem in close range combat, but Battlefield games have always been the mid to long range gun fights.

The FOV problem also isn't a small issue.  It looks like your guy disconnected his eyeballs and placed them far in front of his body on his gun.

I will say one nice thing about the game, and that is that flying a helicopter is actually pretty good here.  Very simple, but still fun.

I might have to rent it. I have a thing for commanding helicopter gunships, and I'm not seeing any other games satiating this craving.

Really didn't like the demo though. The gun motion is great, but the actual gunplay felt somehow detached, sloppy and ineffective.

The single-player is better than I anticipated.  The maps are absolutely enormous and very open-ended... you can take multiple paths to your objective.  Seriously, the maps are HUGE. Frostbite is a monster of an engine.

Off the top of my head I can remember only a couple.

Bioshock made me feel a little bit motion sick, but not nearly as bad as BF:BC does.  Sure enough, people realized the FOV was some odd aspect ratio choice, and they later patched the 360 version to correct this.

The other game would be one of the PS2 Timespliiters games.  Not the first one, but I remember the second one making me feel terrible after 10 minutes of playing it.

Those are the only two games that I can recall right now.

That kid sent you BF:BC already?

360. I'm going to pretend like my rant about the beta never happened, by the way.

I haven't tried the online yet, but I finished the single player.  kbear is right, this game renders large scale environments quite well.  The last level is really amazing.  The game has loads of problems, which you guys have already hit on.  The FOV took me a good hour to get used to.  I didn't get motion sick, but it was occasionally disorienting.  Controls just aren't good.  It's difficult to aim, and I question how fun that will be online.

And the AI is annoying as hell.  Your squad is useless, and to compensate for the brain-dead enemy AI, DICE made them ridiculously accurate (normal difficulty).  The later levels you are forced to use the needle once every minute.  It becomes a grind.

Definitely worth the renal though.

The multiplayer in the demo is really fun. Feels very much like Battlefield to me. I'm a big Battlefield 2 fan, and sadly my PC will no longer play it so I want to have a replacement.
I might get it but I still have reservations about it only being 24 people and the whole console thing. That being said, the multiplayer is more fun than any other multiplayer game I've played on a console.

The health system.   The worse you do the less you can see, its an unneccesarily punitive mechanic given the lack of recharge trying to pass itself off as verisimilitude.

the converse of this (and far more common design mistake) is the game that gets increasingly easier as you go along, thanks to accumulated weapons, items, and techniques

you start out a worthless scrub and end the game an untouchable God

the difficulty curve is entirely backwards

MGS games are a good example of this

Don't worry about it 'only being 24 people'... it's probably the most chaotic and intense multi-player I've ever experienced.   There's so much shit going on at one time it's incredible.  The destructibility really adds to the immersion.  Definitely get this game if you enjoyed the demo.  I'm gonna be playing it for months.  Also, in the full game there's all these in-game rewards / badges / patches / trophies that you get which are cool and give +points.  Just adds some incentive..

I know dude. I was a hardcore BF2 player and everything in Bad Company seems like a testbed for what will be in BF3.

I never got into the beta, played the single player demo for about 5 minutes, and honestly didn't have any desire to buy the thing but I picked it up yesterday because of a recommendation and while I suck balls at it I've been pleasantly surprised with how fun it is.  I love how you can blow the shit out of basically everything in the enviornment, including the terrain.  Definitely want to see more of that in future games.

The destruction is just lame though. If they had put some effort into at least simulating "real" destruction, maybe it'd be impressive, but this just seems poorly designed. Boom, smoke, hole in the wall. Some times you can actually see the previous model pop out of existence, leaving nothing behind but a bit of smoke.

Not that there is much else that is good about the game. Asshole targeting, odd FOV and excessive gun motion might not have been so bad hadn't it been for the fact that damage tolerance is set far too high. I guess it's done in some effort to cover up for necessary aim assist, but the result is a sucky mess.

Pretty explosions and nice gun models is about all the game does right.

Wee, the AI should be called Jack Bauer.  100% accuracy from 50 miles away.  They can see you at all times.  Your team consists of Red Shirts (Minus the dying part)

Conquest mode comes out this Thursday.  Redesigned and re-lit versions of Ascension, End of the Line, Harvest Day and Oasis will be available to play in this mode all for the low, low price of free.
