apparently every game needs a convincing narrative and leading characters you can connect with now
Of course not. But if people are going to start harping on about "bu bu bu Crackdown", then we shouldn't forget the pretty fucking fundamental differences between these games. I enjoyed Crackdown, but I'm excited about this because it looks to take the super-powered sandbox deal and do
more, or at least something different, with it. We'll see what shortcomings it has, but for now it sounds like a pretty different experience.
I liked Crackdown despite its near complete lack of narrative, but at some point in the game, there needed to be something that pushed things along. A developing story, some variety and progression in the enemy ranks,
something. Combat in Crackdown remained largely the same throughout the game, with the main driving force being agility orbs (which in turn didn't grant any new moves or abilities, only the ability to jump higher and absorb falls). It would have been nice had there been at least boss characters that allowed you to use these improving abilities, and in this way it fails to even eclipse Hulk UD. So yeah, referring to Crackdown as a serious step forward for sandbox gaming is giving the game credit it really doesn't fucking deserve.
