I'mma drive me to the coast this weekend
« on: June 26, 2008, 06:52:13 PM »
This should be interesting.  I am hoping I spend less than a thousand dollars on gasoline.

Rough map:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=&saddr=Bellevue,+WA&daddr=Ocean+Shores,+WA&sll=47.83557,-122.27124&sspn=0.040676,0.074158&ie=UTF8&z=9

Since I may be coming within proximity of indian reservations, I will bring guns and weapons.  I know from watching Deadwood that there's no law on indian lands, so I might take this opportunity to finally murder someone.  At the urging of MAF, I have decided that I must also visit the concrete guillotine and Walmart in Aberdeen.  I have not been in a Walmart since 2004, so this is going to be like reality TV show special.  I am bringing cameras and uh, several tripods to use for taking pictures and to beat people should my weapons fail me.  I'll bring my DSC-W300 Cybershot, my Canon 40D, my cell phone which gives me instantly uploaded photos to twitter (in case I need to take a picture of someone murdering me and get it online quick so Evilbore can take out Internet Justice), a bunch of lenses (prolly my f1.4 50mm, f3.5-5.6ish 28-135mm IS USM lens, and my f4-5.6 70-300mm IS USM lens), and my laptop with mobile broadband, which may or may not work well in bumfuck, WA.

I hope this is interesting.  Or something.  I haven't driven a fair distance in like 7 years so I can't see this happening without something potentially interesting happening.  Am also tempted to go through Cosmopolis and (huhuhuh) Humptulips just because of the awesome names.

Shame you aren't going in the winter-Ocean Shores is a pretty reliable spot for snowy owls, of all things.

Take some pics of the cool sea ducks while you are there near the beaches or rocky cliffs near the shore.

Now that I have a vehicle I can more easily go on duck excursions.  It is out of season for the most part though, right?

I will, I will!  This is just my first trip and I don't get paid until next week, so I want to go somewhere reasonably close.  I know Portland isn't that much further, but frankly I'd like to do a trip to the middle of nowhere so I can get used to driving again.  I haven't even driven in Seattle yet--I need to get comfortable behind the wheel again before I can do city driving.

I will give you fair warning.  I'll probably hit up Portland within the next month, if all goes well and I don't have any commitments.

I decided tonight that if I ever got one of those "buy a car and we'll give you x amount of time of free gas!" I'm driving it to the coast. The Pacific coast. From Pennsylvania.

It would be awful, but beautiful, and pretty much a once-in-a-lifetime thing.

I've always wanted to drive across the country and back but that middle part would be crazy dull unless I plot a route with as many giant balls of yarn and similar roadside attractions as possible.
Going one way on the south side of the US and the other on the North was one of my plans... you could go around the whole thing, and I figure it might be less boring...

Man, sorry MAF, but I wasn't risking getting out of my vehicle in Aberdeen to explore the Walmart.  That place is pretty, uh, intimidating.  It's got atmosphere and character and all that, but like the wrong kind.

I used to work with a guy from Spokane. He moved his wife and kids clear across the country because he hated it so much. Said it was the most depressing place on earth.

I figured for middle Ohio to seem like a great destination, it must have sucked.

I have never been on the same side of the Cascade mountain range as Spokane and shit.  I've heard scary things.  Scary, BORING things.  Plus I hear there are lots of mormons to the east.  Well, I guess that falls into the scary category.

Wait, you're only driving for like 3 hours? That's nothing. :)

The most I've ever driven was like 9 though, which is nothing to some people I'm sure. But yeah, 3 hours? Listen to a few good, solid albums on the way and you won't notice the time. :D

I drove from Sacramento to Portland, which was my longest drive. I forget how long, but I informed them to greet me with a shower and a six pack, and they obliged.

Roundtrip is was probably in the neighborhood of 6-7 hours.  Probably closer to 6.

Aberdeen would have been frown town had I gone into the WalMart or not!  I stopped at Ocean Shores for the better part of an hour and walked to the ocean and shit.  It was chilly there (50 degrees), but fuckin' 90 in Aberdeen.

I honestly should have waited.  I wanted to check out Olympia and shit, and I kind would like to go INCOGNITO and investigate Aberdeen.  And are Aberdeen and Hoquiam like, the same town?  I couldn't tell where one began and the other ended.

I would have waited, but Saturday is BLIZZ DAY plus Doctor Who Omega Crossover Season Finale Day, so I had to be here and Sunday is zzzzz day.  Next weekend is HELL TRAVEL WEEKEND.  It was basically either today or not for a bit.  I really want to hit up Olympia and the Olympic National Forest, though.

It's fun to fly over, though!

Have you been up to Bellingham?
