my work just announced layoffs
« on: June 26, 2008, 07:46:23 PM »
I won't have a job come September. Neither will my entire department of 50+ people, save for 12 people including managers. All the part-timers will be gone, which includes me. Everyone who works night shift will be gone. Lots of my favorite full-timers will be gone.

I work in foodservice at a hospital. The hospital is being cut down to 25 outpatient beds and 25 inpatient ones. The cafeteria will be only open for breakfast and lunch, and will be closed weekends and holidays.

All told, the hospital will be laying off 400 to 500 people.

This sucks. :(

It's the Geisinger Health Care System. The facility I'm in has only been owned by Geisinger for three years--before that, it was Mercy Hospital, founded by the same nuns who founded my college. It would have closed 3 years ago if Geisinger hadn't bought it out, so it could be worse.

There are two other local hospitals in the Geisinger system. One is giant and about the same distance from me as the one I work at. The other is about an hour away, near Bloomsburg, PA (Geisinger Danville, but I don't think anyone here is local enough to know it).

This whole thing sucks. Thanks for the replies though!

Also, my day just got worse. I wanted to wear khakis out tonight. I have one pair and I cannot get them buttoned.

Evidently my plan of action is:
1. Find a new fucking job
2. Lose some fucking weight

I don't know what bothers me more right this second--the fact that me, and hundreds of others, will be jobless soon, or the fact that I can't button my size 0 khakis. And I think this makes me a bad person. :(

Well I have a very small frame, and carry my excess weight (which is, truthfully, only like 10 pounds) around my middle.

The good thing about the job situation is that I'll be taking a test to get a government job as a caseworker on September 2. But I was planning on staying at the hospital nights and weekends to save for a house and pay back student loans. But I mean, I realize that LOTS of people are a LOT worse off.

I love you, Evilbore.

I have spent a lot of time in and around Geisinger in Danville.  Brilliant hospital.  Incredibly huge and fun to get lost in.  I lived maybe 30-40 minutes from there.

On the bright side, they told you months before it happened.

That helps A LOT.

Yeah. Hopefully between then and now something else will come along. Possibly something even better. Don't get too bummed.

My friend works at that one and it takes her from 10 to 15 minutes to walk from her job to her car. The parking lots are huge and it's like a giant hospital.

I could easily move in with her and transfer to that hospital--and they have a ton of openings--but I'd never see my boyfriend. :(

I'm glad they told us this far in advance. Rumors have been flying for a while, since before I got there apparently, but the whole thing just sucks. They hired me months ago and hired two new people after me who haven't even started yet. Why hire people if most everyone's getting the can soon, you know? Stupid. If I were one of those two people I'd be like "okay nevermind, I'm not working for two months and then getting laid off kthx."

At least this isn't like, my career. Just a place to make money until I can get in as a county caseworker. But I was still planning on working nights and weekends, and I do like it there. Boo.

Yeah, what the fuck at Size 0? Is that even healthy? Don't become a twig-lady, nikki. That ain't cool.

I'm trying to find a recent picture of myself where you can tell I'm not too thin, but I'm sitting down in all of them. The full-body ones I have, I'm in my graduation gown, so that won't help lol. But I promise I'm not too thin.

From Danville to Wilkes-Barre?  I used to do Bloomsburg to Wilkes-Barre all the time in like 40 minutes when I was in the illegal goods market.  Danville couldn't be more than 10 minutes from Bloomsburg.  I think gas would be more of a concern than time.

It takes me from like 45 minutes to an hour go to between Bloom and W-B. My friend lives right by the University. Actually, you know the fountain by the University? Across from the monument? The fountain you're not supposed to go in? I was in it on Monday night. :D

But it takes like $15 in gas to go back and forth, so I'd never commute down there for a foodservice job. Maybe if I were making more than 8 bucks an hour, but you know.

PR! I found some recent pictures and I am not too thin. In fact, I have some pudge.
spoiler (click to show/hide)

Me at our friend's graduation party last month, after an AWESOME catch. Those jeans are a size 2 and are one of my favorite pairs.

Psychology Club and Psi Chi officers from a dinner in the beginning of May. I'm the second from the right, in the black top and black/pink skirt.

And this one, from a party at my house on May 24. I'm the one in pink holding the puppy, and you can see the pudge around my middle.

See, just because you wear a size 0 or 2 doesn't automatically mean you're a rail. I just have a small frame and carry my weight weird.

:( Nikki :(

I hope it all goes well

When did you get back, Himumu? :heart Thanks!

I was actually thinking that. But I only started in like April, so I might not qualify because of the short time I've been there.

That sucks!

I was actually told yesterday that it's highly likely our entire team, except the boss, will be outsourced next year. So even if I can work in the outsourced team, my salary will likely be cut a ton.

This sucks too :(

Yeah me too, weird that you have that being as you're a girl, usually women get it evenly or in their butt/thighs.  Anywho, trying to get rid of this bit of a gut cause my arms and legs are fine but I've got to tone up my stomach and chest.  Gotta hit the gym tonight. :punch

That was the only picture from that night where I'm not actually sitting down, lol.

Okay, cool. I don't understand women clothes and shit, so when I hear Size 0 that doesn't sound too good.

By the way, nice pictures.  :-*

Well size 0 is pretty small, it's like the smallest any company making women's clothes will make. For t-shirts, if XS isn't available, I try to get a youth XL. And thank you. :)

My thighs/legs are big as far as I'm concerned, but they ALWAYS have been. Ecro will disagree until the day I die, though.

My mom gains weight mostly in her belly but spread out everywhere else. My grandma only gains weight in her belly area and has tiny arms and chicken legs. I'm kind of a mix between the two.

Nice pictures. i think you are a cutie and your body is perfect. I see no chub.

Aw thanks.

That does suck. I'd find another job rather than let my salary get cut, unless the salary is so high that cutting it won't really affect you. [But how many people have salaries that high, really?] :(

That's horrible. I was laid off one time for 2 weeks. It was a crappy feeling. I think the worst thing was that there were coworkers that were paycheck-to-paycheck people w/ kids. Very sad to see their anxiety.

Make sure you suck up some unemployment money if you are due. Also remember that there is a one week "waiting period" to collect money.

My boss was crying. He was a cook up until pretty recently and just moved up to management, so he was really 'one of us', you know? And he's like, "these people are my friends. I can't just tell them they won't have jobs anymore." It was sad.

My favorite diet clerk has worked there for 36 years, and she's one of them who is getting the can. The whole thing just sucks.

I definitely plan on collecting unemployment if I can. I was kind of laid off twice before [by kind of, I mean my hours kept getting cut until there were none, but no one ever said "you've been laid off", they just stopped scheduling me and others because we weren't needed] and didn't collect either time. Plus now I have to pay for private health insurance [and Ecro and I are saving for a house!], so I'm definitely going to try to collect unemployment.
