F you. I made a fool of myself calling out EO2.

I was wrong, EO2 is better, but FFTA:2 is more playable.

luminous arc is 26 hours of awesome focused animu story. What happened to FFTA2 rocking Viz? Where's the rocking? Did I need to pre-order the game somewhere special to get the rockage? Was it best buy that gave out the good gameplay with FFTA2? shit, all i got was a Gamestop bag.

ffta2 is perhaps the most perfunctory tactical s-rpg ever made. it's the skeleton of a real s-rpg. normally, i am all for casting aside story and characters to focus on the core gameplay, but in the case of ffta2, it has resulted in some of the most sterile scenarios and useless character development decisions ever. it's the opposite of, say, a blizzard game: everything has been made so generic and reductive that the whole experience is meaningless. it's like doing your checkbook, only with bad animu art. i'm still having a certain level of fun, because i am the sort of person who as a child would play with a calculator for amusement, but this is some seriously dull shit. it might as well be sudoku, since its whole design thrust seems to be "occupy the player's time" with little ambition beyond that.

also WHY THE FUCK DOES IT TAKE SO LONG FOR THE CPU TO MOVE. if you're gonna make a perfunctory game, pass that efficiency on to the interface. disgaea can get pretty dry, too, but at least it's snappy!

I'm sorta enjoying it, even if I have better things to be playing on DS right now.

And I hate the CPU and its slooow speed and the story sucks. But the core gameplay's entertaining enough.

EO2 isn't really hard after the first level or two.  The trick is just to grind the fuck out of it and build up your characters into badasses.  I fuck owned Chimera last night- Issen/All-out/Ricochet X2 = Chimera with a sore ass from my HUGE COCK.

Ive played much slower tactics games.

K, I'm buying either Luminous Arc or TA2 tomorrow. Which should it be? Loved Tactics, love Fire Emblem, hated Tactics Advance, The only thing putting me off about Luminous Arc is that it seems too simple from what I've heard/read.  I don't want to get bored halfway through and never pick it up again. Still, based on what you guys say, Tactics Advance 2 doesn't seem to be much better than it's prequel. Halp.

Then why would you even think about picking up the sequel? It's basically the same boring shit.

What didn't you like about FFTA? Because FFTA2 fixes almost all of the problems FFTA had except for the story, which happens to be surprisingly worse. I am really enjoying the game so far.

I don't know much about Luminous Arc, but after reading this review I don't think I'll even bother to try it.

in all seriousness, i prefer luminous arc. it's a bit dry itself (mechanically), but it's not as shallow as, say, onimusha tactics or saiyuki. tactics advance 2 has mechanics in spades, but it's all wrapped in obnoxiously slow gameplay, uninteresting combat scenarios (bad map design, specifically), and a complete lack of plot ("yay! i am in ivalice!" "what now?" "YAY!"). it IS pretty to look at (for a ds game), even if the hitches and general sluggishness of feedback, menus, and turns massively detracts from the overall polish.

i'd say get disgaea psp instead of either! (or wild arms xf, if you want depth and crazy-hard challenge.)

that review's #1 complaint -- the lousy touch-screen support -- also exists in identical form with ffta2.  you shouldn't use a touchscreen with a console-style tactics game, anyhow -- it's slow and inefficient!

What bothered me was the bit about it being a unpolished FFTA clone. However, I am intrigued by the multiplayer options and it does seem to have a better art direction than FFTA2 (despite the worst graphics and effects).

Its got a better story than FFTA thats for fucking sure. A lot of people hero worship the awful FFTA games thanks to the FFT pedigree, but LA isnt the horrible game they attempt to make it look to be so that the FFTA series can stand alone looking better than it actually is.

• The UI is VASTLY improved over FFTA. It's much less of a hassle to see the abilities on an item and the abilities of your characters.
• Score is fantastic (because it remixes FFXII and FFT tracks lol).
• All characters get experience, whether they fight or not. More experience is gained to those who participate more. There's an MVP system. AP points are spread to all party members equally after a fight. It's much easier to master an ability.
• The battlefields are gorgeous 2D. The spells have some beautiful 3D effects. Huge upgrade over FFTA.
• The law system has been overhauled. At the start of every battle you can choose from a list of clan privileges that can boost specific stats. If you break a law, you'll lose the privilege and you won't be able to resurrect any characters. There are no other penalties (it's actually fun now).
• MP system works similarly to Tactics Ogre I think. Everyone begins with no MP and gains an amount at the beginning of every turn, keeping casters consistently useful.
• The overworld/map building elements have been changed entirely (for the better). Traveling and taking over areas are much more accessible and intuitive now. Gone are the disappearing regions from the first game.
