I'm in the mood for some High Fantasy, what should I read?
« on: June 29, 2008, 02:55:02 AM »
Moorcock? Feist? Martin? Somebody else? I've already read as much Jordan as I can stand back in high school, I bailed on the WoT after Book 5. I've got A Game of Thrones already from about 5 years ago when I meant to read it, but then I only read the first chapter and I never came back to it. I'm thinking about starting on it right now, but my brother has a bunch of Feist that I could borrow also.

Feist is entry level light stuff. I love it, but its for when youre too lazy to read better stuff like Erikson, Martin and the like

The manga isnt that good. Lots of empty pages with really manufactured manga art. Every once in a while someone goess ARGHHHHH or UNFFFF or STOP! or NO!. I bought the big Manga Sunwell Trilogy TOME ultimate hardcover edition just to have it cause I grabbed the two TCG Alliance/Horde full print releases as well as the official TCG Art Book

I dunno why I did it. I havent looked into the graphic novel versions of Magician yet. I've seen em but I dunno, I kinda like the stories without pictures working against my expectations.

I tripped over this series a few years back:

It's pretty light reading, very pulpy, but pretty entertaining. It was the guy's first crack at writing and it shows, but he gets progressively better with each book. A bit more light sci-fi than fantasy, but really enjoyable if you want something with decent action that's a quick read.

The best non-Erikson fantasy I've read recently is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. Very approachable, fairly well-written, great characters and story.

Martin (ASOIAF) is definitely fuck awesome

I'm gonna check out Feist. Something more light than Martin/Erikson sounds cool

Feist is nice and light, I breeze through the stuff quickly.

I love Martin though. He was my first exposure to fantasy stuff, and I just couldn't put A Game of Thrones down when I got it.

Feist rocks cause if you feel like skimming you can and it all still works, but if you feel like reading there's still a lot of detail to his scenes.

Robin Hobbs stuff is on par with Feist easily, and worth looking into.

Gregory Keyes I would say is closer to Erikson. Both write some hardcore fucking characters.
