Survey finds that Americans are stupid and shortsighted.

Quote
WASHINGTON - High gasoline prices have dramatically changed Americans' views on energy and the environment, with more people now viewing oil drilling and new power plants as a greater priority than energy conservation, according to a new survey.

The poll released Tuesday by the Pew Research Center shows nearly half of those surveyed — or 47 percent — now rate energy exploration, drilling and building new power plants as the top priority, compared with 35 percent who believed that five months earlier.

Most people would like to maintain their lifestyle however blind that is and something you can't really fault them on. It's just that more people need to be made aware that 'American' style consumerism and consumption is unsustainable when you have other economies such as China, India and Brazil gaining new found wealth.

I don't know.

Personally, I think that most Americans have been built up with the opinion of themselves as amazing, beautiful geniuses since the beginning.  To have to change their lifestyles is something that Europeans, third worlders, and the poor have to do.  The rest of America doesn't need to do it.  Jingoism has become so deeply ingrained in society.

So this is why "well, find more oil lol" is considered a legitimate solution.

Americans are just paranoid about the wrong things. I read elaborate conspiracy theories regarding everything from poisoning of the water supply to nanomachines in vaccines, yet people seem largely ambivalent about, say, corporations. You know, the ones that are squarely focused on gain with little regard for stepping on individuals. This oil shit is the same thing. "Let's drill for oil," the people scream, seemingly oblivious of that this drilling would mostly benefit the few, the interested corporations ad conglomerates, as opposed to the state, and subsequently the people. But the again, with people being more paranoid over the actions of the state than the actions of firms that are, in fact, purely driven by profiting off of consumers, I suppose it all fits well enough.

And once the hyperinflation kicks in, nobody will be able to afford import beer since we will need wheelbarrels of worthless american rubles to buy even a roll of toilet paper.  We will be wiping our asses and inadvertently sodomizing ourselves with q-tips trying to clean our precious buttholes cheaply.

China, India etc. don't worry about oil because their government's subsidize it, hence their demand doesn't fall off even with high oil prices. There's a part of me that thinks oil should be subsidized by Western governments too just to even the playing field.

I'm not exactly sure how short-sighted it is, in times of crisis, to prioritize short-term needs over long-term ideals.  Saying people have the luxury of caring about regulating consumption until scarcity cuts into their ability to lead a normal life is not exactly sociological rocket science. It seems to me this is the most basic of predictable behaviors, Americans or no.

haha crisis. its not even CLOSE to a crisis yet. Americans are lazy, and the people who support a 'oh noes my wallet hurts time to drill in the habitat of another animal thats dying out' are fucking morons.

Seriously. People may say that it's common human behavior and in a broad sense that is likely true, but I can say for certain that every one of the other nations that I've lived in has had a significantly higher threshold for what is considered a serious crisis. With the way people are talking about this "energy crisis" and how it affects them, you'd think this nation would just fall apart if the gas prices go a dollar higher.

And you'd also think that people seem to still be under the impression that further drilling would directly lead to success and happiness for the ordinary Joe, when it's in reality just another avenue for private bidding. If it was a strictly state owned and controlled venture, I could see a point in this talk (as shortsighted and fear-fueled as it may be), but it isn't. The shortage isn't so much a shortage as it is a short and long term strategy on the parts of the oil industry.

This isn't even effectively shortsighted.  New exploration and drilling would take years to have an impact on prices, and even then it would be a small impact.

Shortsighted would be slashing the payroll tax or something.  This is more like nonsighted.

I'd kinda agree with you, except that in reality, Amerikuns way of thinking is

I'm not exactly sure how short-sighted it is, in times of crisis, to prioritize short-term needs over everything else

and as someone says, oil drilling doesn't solve anything because of private bidding.  do you seriously think BIg Oil will decrease the oil price in any helpfully meaningful way, with bigger supply of Oil from US soil?  Or have you not been paying attention to their actions ;)
