Evil Parenting: books about animals?
« on: July 02, 2008, 01:29:04 PM »
Does anyone know of any good animal/nature books for a 3-4 year old? I have a bunch of books on sharks, snakes, spiders etc, but they are all written with adult readers in mind. Are there any very good books of these types written specifically for kids that you'd recommend? The best would be to find a whole line of very good books focusing on different animal species, but individual ones work too. I dread to think that the kid will get her knowledge about marine life squarely from Spongebob. :(

I've never heard of Ranger Rick, although a subscription based thing sounds cool; I bet the kid would love getting her own magazine in the mail. Thanks.

No. And furthermore, The Berenstain Bears rank only slightly lower than Caillou on the shit scale of shit shows that teach the kid little else than that we are comparatively shitty parents.

You may also want to check out Owl magazine. I was surprised to learn it was still going. It's not exclusively about animals, but when I was growing up there was always a pretty good amount of animal related stuff in them.

Dude, fucking Zoobooks. There is none finer.

Big awesome pictures of cheetahs and elephants and crocodiles and zebras and bears and DAMN Zoobooks were fine.

Oh man, the sharks issue. I'm getting all nostalgic over here.

Hmm. And they would have those at, say, Borders? I'll be heading there today, might be cool to come away with something other than another god damned Care Bears coloring book.

I loved the Zoobooks issues about turtles and elephants and birds of prey and wolves.

Did you know that elephant skulls may be responsible for the myth of the cyclops? It's true!  :o

they should have a rather large-ish kids mag section

look for the magazines hidden behind the yu-gi-oh crapola

or try the DK picture books suggested above

oh, also, try the bargin section

Zoobooks! Highlights for kids!

I also had an encyclopedia set that was meant for like gradeschool students, and I used to read it ALL THE TIME.
