Canadians prefer Obama to their own PM: poll

OTTAWA (AFP) — Canadians hold US presidential hopeful Barack Obama in higher esteem than any of their own politicians, including their prime minister, a public opinion poll suggests.

Twenty-six percent of respondents to the survey for the Toronto Globe and Mail newspaper and CTV television identified Obama as the politician they "admire most".

In second place was conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper at 21 percent, followed by Obama's former rival for Democratic nomination, Hillary Clinton, who easily bested all Canadian opposition leaders with 16 percent.

"It's one of those relatively rare moments when we look south of the border at their politics with something approaching envy," said pollster Peter Donolo of Strategic Counsel, which conducted the poll.

The Republican candidate for the White House, John McCain, was admired by just three percent of respondents to the poll that was published on Monday, the eve of Canada's national holiday.

Strategic Counsel questioned 1,000 respondents between June 12 and 28.

Like hell.

Mounties > all

But Obama >>>> Stephen Harper, Paul Martin, and Stephane Dion combined.

Chretien gets points for throttling protesters with his bare hands though.

I'm pretty sure you could have stuck damn near anyone with a pinch of charisma in that poll and it would have turned out the same way.

"Canadians prefer Hulk Hogan over Prime Minister" would not be a shocking headline.

The title implies that Willco has already called the current election in favor of Obama.

I like that.

Harper is a bland, boring, unmemorable redneck with no character

quite telling that the press is still talking a lot more about that two months-old relationship scandal (the minister who went out with the woman who's had relationships with Hell's Angels members in the past) than whatever policies Harper and The torries have adopted

:lol @ Harper being a "redneck".  Have you seen how uncomfortable Harper looks in a cowboy hat?  Harper's no redneck, he's a policy wonk nerd.
