I'm trying to actually control the top character. But, everything is happening so fast, its virtually impossible to line up her "cards" in the correct order so I can do the power move. Y'all leaving the top screen on automatic?

How far are you into the game? I was in the same boat for the first few days (in game), but I adjusted to its franticness reasonably quick and it became almost like second nature to me.

Or you can play like my mate does and just bash left or right (while ignoring up/down and patterns).

I got really overwhelmed with both screens, ended up not paying attention to the top screen except on boss fights, worked out well. I liked how they gradually kept introducing new mechanics, instead of piling them all on the beginning. Even past the halfway point, there's still new stuff to be learned about the battle system.

Yeah, I'm on day 3. They just introduced the card mechanic. I think I can probably get a hang of it, but it pisses me off how you're forced to press left or right and then up or down. Should have just been U/D/L/R.

Because I guarantee that you're not going to make it on Week 2 and especially 3. The difficulty ramps up quite a bit, and presumes that you have gotten a hold of the dual screen mechanic.

leave it on Fast automatic, but attempt to use Shiki in fights.  you can even "assist" automatic mode by letting it press the first few buttons, then filling in the rest on your own.  Focus on passing the green light back and forth so you only attack with one character at a time...while using Shiki, scribble the bottom screen to keep Neku moving.

you'll get it eventually.  It's very worth it to learn using both too, since it makes the game 1000x more fun, especially as you get block and jump skills with Shiki.  little by little you'll feel a bit better.  wake up, time for us to realize! wake up--FUCKING MUSIC.

Here's two opinions:

1) I know two people who put it on fast auto about the third day and finished the game that way.  No real complaints from them.

2) I put it on fast auto right away, then slowly weaned myself off of it.  Firstly, as someone above said, you do get 'used' to the speed of the action.  Second, you'll learn that some pins are much easier to use without looking at the bottom screen than others; you can build your deck with a couple of those that you use when the light puck is with your partner and a couple of pins with more demanding activations for when you're controlling Neku.

Overall, great game, wonderful character design.  I really love the drop rate adjustment - more games need this!  It lets you keep the difficulty exactly where you want it.

it does get easier, dont wanna spoil you though

joshua is clearly the easiest to match with and get those partner combo things. Basically you can press X then mash Y or B which spams the really fast (but really weak) laser looking attacks, which give insanely fast powerups. then you can focus fighting with neku, looking up just to see if joshua has been knocked down once in a while

Alright, its getting frustrating. I simply cannot pull it off. They're constantly knocking Shiki down because I'm not inputing the button presses fast enough. I'm left handed, so I'm beginning to wonder if its easier using the d-pad to control the top character than the face buttons?

im left handed as well

just use auto until later in the game

auto:mid lets you override the AI if you press a button within 3 seconds, otherwise it does its own thing

Just press left/right on the d-pad repeatedly, depending on where your enemies are on the top screen (Joshua is very, very useful in this sense).

Really, once you get the hang of the game basics, the game is incredibly easy. I've gotten so comfortable with the battle system that even hard mode is pretty easy.
