Glance into the life of an audiophile

This is a swedish guy who got famous on a headphone hi-fi forum after modding his headphones with a hardwired £4000 cable.
In this video, you can see him showing off his system setup and his ERS paper.

Why does he describe his setup in the hushed tones of someone who is planting a bomb and describing how it works? Are people seriously this obsessively fastidious about something so trivial? Is this even real?

I'm so confused

He claims that his voice is actually that weak. He even posted a thread about advice how to speak louder.

Are people seriously this obsessively fastidious about something so trivial?

Here's where I could link you some GAF thread about the actual rendered pixel resolutions in cross-platform games...

Is this even real?

Jury's still out on that one. But look at his other videos (well, maybe not the one where he makes "pizza")

I have a Japanese audiophile friend. He built his own speakers (from specially-chosen woods...), is constantly upgrading and tweaking his set-up in the weirdest of ways. He obsesses about things like the quality of his house's electric current, and installed a voltage regulator to ensure a supply of "clean" electricity. The distressing thing was, both my wife and I agreed that his set-up didn't even sound that good :(  It sounded better than my (totally average) gear but not thousands of dollars better. Audiophilia is something of a disease. Luckily, I have a mortgage to stop me from getting too deeply into it!

I remember when I used to frequent those forums. I even wanted to make my own amp, rewire my headphones and looked longly at custom made headphone cups. Thank God that passed.

I honestly think it's cool.  He gets that much enjoyment out of it, good for him.  The only time obsessions become annoying is when they're focused around belittling another obsession.  That's the problem I have with videogame pixel counters who do it to flame fanboy wars.  This guys is just really into what he's doing and he's getting enjoyment from it.  More than most nerds on forums can say.  More power to him.
