Who's still playing Age of Conan?
« on: July 04, 2008, 04:30:50 PM »
I just got it today.  It's kinda intimidating since I've never played a MMORPG aside from some dabbling with the WOW and LOTR betas.

Which race/class should I start with?  I guess I'll probably go with PVE first since I've no idea what I'm doing.

I'll probably just play it for the one included month.  I won't be playing enough to justify paying the monthly fee.

With the 24gb install and 2gb patching, this game's taking 2 hrs to start.  WTF   :maf

i still play.

the races really don't matter beyond class.

beware of mage classes.   they're NOT like you'd normally thing of mage classes.  the first 20 levels are all intro, and personally, i enjoyed the hell out of them, many people do not.

i don't know what kind of char you're looking for, but i enjoy the dark templar, the bear shaman (omg fucking pain in the ass until level 15, which is a horribly steep learning curve), and the Host of Xighghghgfdhslgjhgh which is a dps melee mage.  lots of fun, but squishy until level 10.

The first grouping instance isn't until your 30s w/ the black temple or your late 30s w/ the Sanctum.  There are some quests which it suggests groups for, but you can usually Duo them.

I don't play pvp so i can't answer your questions regarding that, unfortunately.  and the crafting is horrible so i can't tell you much about that.

my server is Dagoth and my characters are: Fantomas, Sethmora, Fasalan, Ivrian (my main), and then Baille.  My highest char is lvl 42, but i have 30s and 20s and such and am comfortably familiar w/ the systems if you have any questions.

suggestion: shader 2.0, no shadows.

Eric P, I'm playing on your server with my 1 character.  His name is Loner and he's a Lvl 18 Cimmerian Conqueror.  So far, the game seems to be average but it's likely that MMORPG gameplay isn't for me.  Also, the game runs at max settings smoothly on my PC at 1920x1200 but the visuals still aren't that impressive, except for the detail in the character models.   But I'll give it a try 'till the end of the month.  I'll get my money's worth if I play about 1-2 hrs a day.

The game gets really tough when I reach lvl 15.  Is it because the Conqueror is not a good class for soloing?  All of a sudden, I would get swarmed by 3 or more enemies of pretty high level.  After LVL 15, dying and resurrecting seems like a regular occurance.  Do you have any tips on combat when there're mobs of enemies?  Also, how do you add someone to a friend's list?  I might need your help with the Bat Demon quest.  There're too many Pict warriors for me to make it to the top.

not playing, but still paying.  Thanks for reminding me.

That's one reason why I've never played a MMORPG until now.  Finacially, it just makes no sense for someone who won't play regularly like myself.  I'd rather pay for each min of gametime.

How far did you get before you stop playing?  I just want to reach LVL20 so that I can see what the rest of the gameworld is like.  After a tour of all the regions, I can probably stop playing.

Eric P, I'm playing on your server with my 1 character.  His name is Loner and he's a Lvl 18 Cimmerian Conqueror.

cool.  I'll add you to my friends list.

So far, the game seems to be average but it's likely that MMORPG gameplay isn't for me.

a distinct possibility.  conan isn't exactly new user friendly, I don't think.  it takes you through Torage and that's all neat and such, but it isn't until like level 30 or so that grouping becomes a must for some classes, granting you a bit of the "massivley multiplayer" aspect of it.

I did a conquerer, but only to level 21.  I found them to be problematic when soloing.  great support characters in a party, but not as great for soloing as they don't have much in the way of self healing or crowd-control allowing you to take on multiple enemies at once.

All of a sudden, I would get swarmed by 3 or more enemies of pretty high level.  After LVL 15, dying and resurrecting seems like a regular occurance.

I found it difficult as well.  Taking on higher level or even in some instances same level mobs in groups of more than two are quite difficult.  I think it may be an aspect of that class, because I didn't have as much trouble with my HoX, DT, nor my Bear Shaman (esp after lvl 15 or so).

Do you have any tips on combat when there're mobs of enemies?

You can disengage and run around for a bit and heal up.  The mobs will come after you but won't hit you for as much, so you can heal up then turn around and kick their asses.  make certain you are buying food for health and food for stamina bonuses.  It all costs the same, don't be afraid to splurge.  Keep health and stamina potions on you and in your quick access bar.  I toss mine in the left hand side so I can quickly get to them.

Also, how do you add someone to a friend's list?

It's not very intuitive.  you have to search for that person by name, then you can add them instead of just adding them directly.

I might need your help with the Bat Demon quest.  There're too many Pict warriors for me to make it to the top.

unfortunately once you leave tortage you can't go back to it with the newbies.  it's kind of neat.  I probably have a lower level char in tortage still.  I'll take a look and hit you up if I do.

Thanks for the tips and adding me to your friend's list.  Would I see an invitation like Steam?

Sorry about that.  I left the game on when I was away a couple of times.  Maybe I should add you instead or you can try again.  Which is the character that you're currently using?

Btw, I finally made it to lvl 20.   :elephant

The final fight was pretty awesome.  Cimmeria has some nice wilderness but the city itself is disappointing.  I wish it were more like a big, sprawling city instead of a tiny prehistoric village.

conarch is small.  most of cimmeria is made up of small camps and villages like conarch, and that valley.  you may find Tarantia to your liking instead, but watch out for the noble zone.  it's intended for the 40s.

but these aren't "capital cities" so to speak.  at least not in the lore.  these are just the starting points for the game.  The Stygian "city" is a small island.  Now that you're out of the starting area, I can give you a hand should you need it for some quests.

make certain you upgrade your potions and foods.

You'll also get some quests for learning how to gather, but I can't help you out with that.  I have no idea how to do it and haven't really found it that important.

around lvl 30 or so you'll get quests to take on the Ymir.  In the books Ymir is the god of the Frost Giants.  In the game they're a race of basically ice giants  with a ridiculous amount of HP so you'll definitely want to group up.

I was on Baille, my lvl 15 guardian last night just to see if I could help you out w/ Tortage.  Tonight I'll most likely be on Ivrain (bear shaman) or Fantomas (Dark Templar).

Holy shit, I'M STILL PLAYING CONAN!

Tyranny PVP server
Guild Name: Amazon Storm
Characters:  Unaninos  -lvl 42 Ranger,  Unehoe  -lvl 18 Conquerer

Amazon Storm is recruiting for its all-female guild!  We need like 6 more members and we'll have a city.  We have some players around the high twenties right now, mid forties and fifties, and a few in the teens.  One of our players was a beta tester, but the players in the 40's/50's are all MMO veterans, so we've got a really good base of knowledge for new players to take advantage of.

We're a casual guild that mainly gets together on Saturdays, but you'll see us in smaller packs during the week as well.  Send a tell if you're interested!

if i did pvp i'd be interested

right now i'm doing a PoM having just worked a ToS to 40 and a BS to 43.  I REALLY like the priest classes, though PoM is a bit wimpy for me in solo aspects.
