Hacking my DS
« on: July 05, 2008, 07:30:28 AM »
I've been doing some poking around, and apparently since the last time I checked the DS hacking scene has really taken off. Being the filthy poor that I am, I would love to be able to download and play NDS roms. Besides, I've lost interest in my DS as of late, so I'll treat this as an opportunity to get some use out of it again. However, I'm a bit overwhelmed with the amount of information provided via Google. So, where to get started? How much will everything cost? Are all roms supported? How well does SNES emulation work? Will this be difficult at all?

http://www.realhotstuff.com/cyclods-evolution-p-213.html plus micro SD card

http://www.realhotstuff.com/expansion-pack-p-194.html if you want GBA support

I paid 100 dollars for the CycloDS, 2 gig micro SD card and the EZ Flash 3 in 1, but I had to get a new SD card reader after the one that came with the CycloDS died.

Pirating DS games is piss easy.  Just download the rom, drag and drop to the micro SD card and begin playing.  Most DS roms work, but sometimes a new game will come out that won't work at first, but firmware updates usually fix that.  GBA games work with the expansion pack, but the saves sometimes don't work.  SNES emulation is very iffy and not worth it.  NES and Gameboy emulation is much better, but even then is not perfect.

Wow, that looks much more simple than what I was looking at. That would be all that is needed? No PassMe/FlashMe stuff to deal with?

Also, are there any recent introductory guides to explain some of the more detailed stuff? Or is it seriously as easy as popping that into the DS and playing away? I'm a bit thrown off that everything has become so painless; the last thing I modded was my Xbox 5 years ago, and that was way more confusing than this appears to be.

I know its cliche, but if distinguished mentally-challenged fellow such as me can do it, anyone can do it.

Well, now I'm torn. From this thread it looks like the only real difference between the CycloDS and the AceKard is Cyclo's fancy in-game menu. I would love to have save states but I'm not sure if it's worth 30 bucks.

I have a CyclosDS and if nothing else they really stay on top of updating the firm ware. It's obscenely easy to use but DO NOT USE THE CARD READER THAT COMES WITH IT. Other than that, you just plug a card reader intoa  USB slot, drag and drop your ROMS, defrag the card, and pop it back into a DS. SO simple.

All flashcarts are the same, the market is extremely saturated. AceKard updates as well. If there's a ROM that doesn't work on multiple carts, each maker usually churns out a quick fix. Recently, it was Daigasso Band Brothers.

Yeah, I think I'm just going to get the AceKard. Is the card reader that comes with it any less shitty than the Cyclo, or will I have to buy a better one either way? I'm probably being paranoid but I don't want to fry a brand new SD card

I use my card reader just fine. Each maker uses a cheap SD reader, I think, so if you arent comfortable just buy one, shouldnt be expensive
