Street Fighter IV will have character customization.
« on: July 05, 2008, 09:39:00 PM »
Nice to see this is in the game after all, despite the producer's earlier comments that SFIV would have zero customization and/or alternate outfits.  The arcade version will be out on July 18th, by the way.

25,000 Zenny (Capcom's money used in games like Breath Of Fire) to buy an outfit?  Hope you get a lot of zenny when you win a match!

That's fucking awesome. A part of the reason MvC2 was so addicting to me was the shop. I had to have EVERYTHING.

That was boring since it was just for unlocking characters and some alternate colors IIRC.  ZZZZZZzzzzzz

Anyone who really played MvC2 had a hacked save file immediately.   ;)

I like alternate outfits and customization features, but using shops to unlock characters is lame as hell.  This SF4 shop is for the arcade version.  500 yen (likely 400-500 plays only) data card plus character customization via cell phone (for a small fee, I bet!) plus in-game shop = mo' money mo' money mo' money

Yeah, it takes way too much time to spam money in VF5 to buy stuff.  I love the customization, but I hate that they added a grinding aspect to fighting games.

Eh, otherwise we'd just have the same 2 (if that) outfits per person.  Grinding game money can take awhile, but if you're on a good win streak at the arcade then you can build it up pretty fast, especially if they have bonus chances.

The Blanka safari outfit looks so dumb.

Seems like every given non-shooter arcade game has a grinding aspect to keep players coming back and pull them off the MMOs, so this makes sense. (Otomedius might even have player cards and grinding, iirc...).

That Chun Li outfit is the first good thing I've seen out of SF4.

Perhaps you enjoy playing fighting games alone, but these games are made for MULTIPLAYER.  I don't want to have to go through a game multiple times in single player over and over and over and over and over and OVER AND OVER AND OVER AGAIN just to unlock some characters that should have been there from the start in the first place.  It's especially annoying when you or a friend has a favorite character that is not available from the start and must be unlocked through some dumb "quest mode" or multiple playthroughs with every character or something.

Making regular characters hidden just to increase single player replay value is incredibly dumb.  Make bonuses like outfits, stages, music and the like unlockable. Don't lock the fucking characters.  Especially in a game like MvC2 where there's 56 of them.

I'm glad this generally isn't common practice anymore.  Nowadays, it's just a bonus or boss character or two you can unlock, and that's about it.  Recent new console fighters Battle Fantasia (no characters to unlock, just art and outfits), Sengoku Basara X (artwork...the new PS2 characters are there from the start), and KOF '98 UM (only bonus PS2 characters ROTB Iori and Leona, Goenitz, and Orochi need to be unlocked) do it right.

Namco is the worst offender, although they didn't do it with Tekken 5DR and Tekken 6.  It's just Soul Calibur that's still using dumb unlock methods.

If they don't lock up a lot of the best content, a good portion of the jackasses out there will play through once with their favorite character, consider themselves done, and then complain that the game is too short.  Devs can't win.

That type of distinguished mentally-challenged fellow won't keep a fighting game for long anyway.  It doesn't matter.

I used to get people like that at my old job.  "Yo man i beat dis Tekken man.  I passed it."  Uh, you passed it?  "Yeah man I done beat that shit wit' EVERYONE.  Why these games so short?!"  Well, it's a fighting game, so you're supposed to get good at it and play your friends.  You don't "beat" these games.  ***blank stare***

getting all the items in survival mode was a pain! but much better than unlocking costumes through story/time attack.

Really depends on what you like.  Ultimate is slower and probably doesn't have many people online any more (if any.)  4 felt like a way more offensive based game, while my main style in Ultimate was turtling/defense and punishment.   I played Hitomi in both.  I didn't like going from a turtling character to a rush-down-centered character!  I couldn't tell you the hardcore specifics about either game, but both are great if you're a DoA fan.  and ultimate should be super cheap by now.

this makes me want to play both again-- Ultimate is by far my most played game of all time (hundreds of hours online on my old Xbox.) I probably put about a 100 hours into 4 as well.  I haven't played either game in forever (got burnt out on 'em.)

There used to be some very interesting characters in the doa ultimate online community.

i got owned by a tag team using ryu and hayate in doa4, never touched the online part ever since, disgusting humans with no pity for casuals lol.

i like doa, i think it's the best fighting game a casual cigarillo like me could ever want, i never bothered with doa ultimate and 3 because:

- i own doa2 hardcore ps2
- i thought doa4 was enough
- never owned an xbox

it can be brutal online.

Get Ultimate if you liked 2:Hardcore.  it's a shitload better and it's done on the DoAXBV engine, so it looks much better.  and as himuro said, there are shitloads of unlockables to keep you busy.

Capcom vs. SNK had a nice shop, but the point values on any damn thing were ridicoulously high.  Who wants to play seven hours to unlock a new background, anybody?

And yeah, Chun Li is teh hawtness.

It's good, but you don't need it.  DOA4 is the hands-down the best in the series; DOA2U is a big step backwards and doesn't have as much depth or as many moves per character as DOA4 does.  DOA2U did the countering right (it's similar to DOA4's, but still a little easier than DOA4), but everything else was a step backwards from DOA3 at the time.  It sucked being a big Tina user in DOA3 and trying to adjust to the older DOA2 version.

DOA2U does have a shitload of outfits (for the girls, not the guys), but who cares?  You'll play it a bit and never touch it again.  It's also ultra-tedious unlocking all those outfits.  It will take HOURS to do so.  If you have DOA4, you don't need any other DOA game, period.  Go practice up and get back on with DOA4 instead.

You gotta be approaching it the wrong way, maybe?  It's a much less-complex game than VF5.  It's also not as balanced as VF5, so you might want to start off with one of the more powerful characters.  I'm a La Mariposa player, but I also break out Ayane if things get too tough.  IIRC Hayabusa, Kasumi, and Ayane are the top three.  Used to be a big Tina player, but I don't like how they changed her in DOA4.  Looking to learn more grapplers though...not sure if I want to use Bass or Bayman/Leon though.
