When did this become a mandatory "feature" and who are the distinguished mentally-challenged fellows who actually do this?

I remember when I first saw a PS2 and I thought it was such an innovation that it could stand vertically.

The same thing happened with PCs... consoles were just 10 years late

I stood my 360 vertical for a little while, didnt do anything bad. Its flat now since it looks better that way in my setup.

A PC is wide and heavy enough that my cat isn't going to be able to knock it over (well, not without hurting itself).  It also has drives placed horizontally and doesn't have to fit in my component rack which no vertically standing next-gen console is going to be able to do.

I just don't understand why this became the norm.

Aweful idea.  Only good use I've seen of it is when I borrowed my friend's PDZ disk and it got scratched to hell when another friend tilted the console vertically while it was on.  I honestly haven't played a worse fps.

When I borrowed my friend's Playstation a while back to play FF VII, I had to stand the console up vertically in order for the game to actually play. My other friends did the same thing with their systems too whenever their games couldn't read. So as for consoles standing I'm going to say Playstation started a trend ;x . My Wii is going to be lying flat though...

vertical consoles are wayyy better looking and take up much less room! They're awesome!
