This Men's Final is about to get crazy. Nadal and Federer are the best two players the sport has ever seen, and everytime they play each other at Wimbledon it's an incredible match. Federer just forced a fourth set. and I have a feeling it's gonna come down to a fifth and final set.

Yeah, a putt at the end of the final day to tie it, then a one day playoff, still tied, and Tiger winning on the 19th hole AFTER the playoff. So anticlimatic.

last year's was pretty good as well, but iirc, nadal was completely broken in the 5th set; federer won the last set with 6-2, or something, and i was just waiting for federer to win it. today's game was tense up to the last point. a true classic.

Anyway, I was talking about the 19th hole specifically.

He did it with one leg. It was Jordan flu game esque. And the 91st hole not coming down to a final shot is about like saying this tennis match wasn't anticlimatic because Nadal was serving for the win up a point, and was ahead at that whole point. It was only a matter of time before Federer fucked up, and he did. Neither one were do or die situations on the DEAD LAST putt/point.

The 19th hole was over after their respective drives. I shouldn't bother arguing this. I just wasn't as enthralled by the U.S. Open. Both the Super Bowl this year and this match were better. Maybe because the underdog won both times.

Either way, 2008 has been an amazing sports year.

Guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm certain that the US Open probably kicked Wimbleton's ass in ratings, Tiger is just a much bigger star in golf than anyone is in tennis right now. Maybe he's not the underdog, but everyones just waiting for him to break the major record, one of the few untainted highly unlikely records to break. Federer seems like Tim Duncan, just a vanilla dude. No one gave a shit he won several titles with the Spurs, no one really cares about Roger Federer in the same way. People cares a lot more when guys like Agassi and Sampras were playing.

Just saying, no one really cares about that here. Except Serena and Venus on the womens side really. This match will probably go down as one of the greats in tennis history, but its not going to be replayed over and over for years like Tiger's crazy ass US Open win.

Here? What sane sports fan cares about ratings? Especially to judge one sporting event to another. Jesus, that's like fucking sales-age shit. If we go by ratings in America, probably most NASCAR races > this Wimbledon final.

I know Tiger was playing on one fucking leg, but it's still fucking golf (and I love playing golf). And he was in a playoff against some no-name dude. This was two of the greatest tennis players in history, in their primes, playing tennis at the highest possible level, with massive historical implications, for almost 5 hours.

We just have different perspectives. I rather have Tiger going toe-to-toe with Mickelson (I guess, in reality no one is even close), making amazing shot after amazing shot on the back-nine of a major, than what occurred at this U.S. Open.

Well thats your opinion, I just prefer watching Tiger playing rather than two foreigners I don't give a shit about. That's part of the allure of seeing one of the greatest sports figures of all time pull something like that off, the same way seeing Jordan getting carried off the court in the NBA Finals and draining game winning after game winning shot, or watching old fights between guys like Ali and Frazier or Ali and Foreman.

It sounds like a great match, but I really have no attachment to Federer or Nadal. I remember watching Sampras winning his last grand slam title at the US Open and seeing Agassi make a run in his final tournament, and it was more interesting then to me. The same way Tiger was limping on one leg at the Open, Jordan collapsing on the court, or Ali using rope a dope to shock the world.

Its more fun to me, not to see #1 and #2 at the top of their games, but to see guys who are great survive on guile and veteran instinct that makes them great when people think they're done. The Wimbleton final had the top two guys playing a great match, but it wasn't like it was a "shock the world" type of moment.

Last year's match was the best match I had ever seen. Yesterday's might have topped it. The ending was surely much better, but it seemed like there were more unforced errors yesterday. WTF was going on with Federer's backhand? That and his complete failure on Nadal's second serve were his downfall.

Federer could have played better, could Nadal?

I don't know, I do know I want to see them play again at Wimbledon.

Let's see if Nadal can finally make a peep at the US Open coming up.

Nadal definitely could have played better. IMO it would have been over in 3 sets if he didn't slip on that bad knee. He was defintely babying/holding back from that point on so he didn't get a real injury.

I don't feel that way at all. Of course it easily could have ended in 3 sets, but his slip was nothing IMO. I didn't feel like that limited his mobility in any way.

Moreover, I don't remember any shots that he didn't get to that he had a chance at. He got to everything he tried to get to.
