Graspop Metal Meeting 2008 Festival (shit was EPIC)
« on: July 06, 2008, 06:44:47 PM »

I was at this epic festival last weekend and by just taking one glance at the line-up across the 3 days you can see that this may be the best line-up for a Metal festival ever, really hard to top. The biggest names were there.
A bit closer look at the smaller names and you discover tons of gems as well.

Graspop is an annual 3-day metal festival held in Dessel, Belgium. We stayed at the camping, arriving 1 day earlier on thursday, to set everything up. After all the hassle of pitching our tent (lulz) we went to get some food coupons and a festival wristband; the way to get in the festival and camping area. Food coupons were priced ok I guess, with it's 1 euro a piece price. Now drinking coupons were fucking expensive. It was 9 euro for 4 coupons, 18 for 8 etc. You exchange 1 drinking coupon for 1 cup of beverage of your choice; coke, water, beer, fanta etc. This was different with the food ones. There were several types of food stands and each had their own pricing. (some of them cost 4 or 7 coupons) But who cares. Even though it was really expensive it didn't bother me.

Next day, shit was about to begin...

Friday

Tesla
First band to perform was Tesla. I only know them through GTA Vice City with the song Cumin' Atcha Live, which I really like... and they started off with that song. It was a good kick-off and the rest of the songs were ok as well, even if I didn't knew any of them.

*click on all images to see full size!*

up next was my motherfucking hero..

Yngwie Malmsteen
:bow                                :bow2

Ok so I got completely up front for this show, I had to see this guy from as close as possible  :-*
He came on stage and pretty much stayed at the same spot for the entire show, occassionally coming forward to do a solo.
I couldn't catch a pick, seeing as he didn't even came close to where I stood :(
Not to mention that the fucker couldn't throw a pick for shit  :P, he just threw them on stage even, he didn't care. It does needs to be said that the stage was a bit too far from the crowd.

Most of his setlist consisted of songs from his most recent album Unleash The Fury. I didn't know any of them yet. Tom 'Ripper' Owens was the guy who did the vocals. The same guy that replaced Rob Halford in Judas Priest for a couple of years.

Here's how close I was to this guitar god:

I REALLY thought he would perform Black Star for his closure, but I waited and waited and..... he didn't play Black Star  :'(

I have taken a LOT more pics from him, completely zoomed in and stuff but I'll post them later  :)

up next..

Symphony X

I've started to like this band more and more lately after I listened to their Paradise Lost album. Michael Romeo's riffs kick ass. The majority of their setlist was from this album, fortunately.

Definitely one of the highlights for me. Really enjoyed the show.

But then!......you'll never guess!!!!!!!

Symphony X were holding a signing session an hour or two after the show was done.... so we decided to go there  :hyper
The wait was really short and after I shook hands with all the band members and got their autographs I took a picture with me and Michael Romeo himself  :D :D :D :D :hyper :hyper :hyper :hyper :omg :omg :omg :omg :punch :rock :rock :rock :rock

Awesomeness.

last act of the day and immediately the biggest one was..

Judas Priest

The Gods of Metal, who doesn't know them. Even though I disagree with that title and I'm sure you know why  ;)

They played a couple of songs from their new concept album Nostradamus (check it out, it's great) and did a shitload of older stuff too. Painkiller is a mandatory for Priest so of course they played that too. On top of that we got Between the Hammer and the Anvil and Hell Patrol. A few more songs of the setlist: Eat Me Alive, Breaking the Law (:rock), The Green Manalishi, Electric Eye, You've Got Another Thing Coming, Hell Bent For Leather, Metal Gods, Devil's Child and Angel (what a beautiful song :angel)

A couple of things need to be said about some bands, and Judas Priest is one of them... They simply aren't loud and powerful enough. When I go to concerts I want to be blown away, with sound and bass piercing through my body and shit. Because Priest was so low in volume I couldn't get really euphoric. Especially Painkiller was a major let-down. Otherwise one of the best Metal songs ever, but simply not powerful enough in concert.
Same story for Iron Maiden. First time I saw them was in 2006 and this show was in a big hall. So it was indoor. The sound quality and volume were excellent. I would say a bit too loud even. After that I saw them at a festival a couple of months later and this was outside. The volume dropped severly. Maybe they're only this way when they are doing festivals, I hope.

Anyway, on to the pictures:

That was Friday.

I intended to write everything down at once but only realize now how long this takes when you also consider I'm resizing and uploading all these pictures. So tomorrow I will continue with day 2, Saturday.

That looks like it was a lot of fucking fun mate. I can smell the sweat from here.

Actually I don't think I've ever smelled the scent of sweat in the course of those 3 days. People were clean, metalheads aren't what they used to be!

Are Iron Maiden playing their Somewhere Back In Time set? That was a good set.

Yes they still are. However I wouldn't say it's a 'good set'. Fucking disappointing is the more appropriate word.

Better than other recent set lists they've done (although Early Years was pretty wicked and definitely beats it).

Sorry for the delay guys, I was kidnapped by alien cyborg ninjas and they wouldn't let me update this thread, they did allow me to post in other threads however... fucking assholes. Anyway..

Saturday

This was a very relaxed day, got up at around 14:15 and pretty much didn't check out many bands (oh man Sunday is even worse  :-\).
I was planning to see Korpiklaani, Sonata Arctica, Forbidden, Immortal, Iced Earth and Kiss. But fate decided that I would only see the last 3. I had to go back to the camping towards the evening to take a shower so I missed out on a bunch, I didn't really care.

This was also MERCHANDISE DAY, the whole place is filled with booths and stands to buy merchandise; t-shirts, posters, flags, cd's, patches, stickers, bags, in short almost everything. I'm a guy that buys a lot of shit he doesn't really need. But I just have to buy band merchandise because it's so fucking awesome :heart
I guess I'll save that part for tomorrow, with pics.

Iced Earth

Should I even bother with uploading pictures anymore? Do people check them out?

Did you take pics of Matt Barlow's beautiful white body?

Yes I did you goddamned homo, I did. All Iced Earth pics for you:

So yeah, I'm not really an Iced Earth fan, haven't listened to more than 2 songs from them but I did enjoy their show. I am certain that this show was the one where the crowd participated the most in all those three days. At least, from what I have seen.
The frontman made some hi-la-rious jokes like how we should enjoy our warm beer and that he will go backstage and drink cold beer..... because he was a rockstar. Ok.
They were fucking loud though, and that's a good thing.

Immortal

Ok, we all know this next gif, right?

That's the only thing I knew about Immortal. And the cheesy video that goes with that gif. I wanted to see them because I consider Black Metal to be very corny and funny. Especially these guys, who are even making it obvious they are joking around. However........ my view of them completely changed after their show. These guys don't fuck around, I was seriously impressed. Their music is even... fucking awesome actually. Stage and effects were superb, they had two very loud... uhh what do you call them? explosions.. and it scared the shit out of me, and I'm sure a lot of others too.
What impressed me the most is that the lead singer didn't talk between songs until the end and when he finally did, he talked with his growling voice. He said something like "Thank you very much, motherfuckers...." .....So badass :lol

Still intending to check this band out, haven't got around to listening to them yet.

KISS

The biggest surprise of the event for me, KISS!
Outside of I Was Made For Lovin' You, I didn't know much about this band, music wise. I knew them since I was a kid, since my mother was somewhat of a Kiss fan.
This was the first real concert I had ever seen. This was exactly how a concert should be. Kiss came on stage and they were fucking LOUD. Lots of pyros, explosions, fireworks, theatrics, guitar solos, drum solos, this gig had it all. I really wish Maiden were like this. Why can't they do any more guitar or drum solos. Their set is so dry and straight to the point.
This Kiss stage had raisable platforms, including the one for the drummer, he rose as he performed his drum solo.
Gene Simmons had that part where he 'spewed out blood', There were some cool guitar solos where the guy shot missiles from his guitar or something :lol
They were really entertaining. There was only 1 thing missing at this show and that was the audience. No one participated in pretty much anything until towards the end. I felt bad for Paul Stanley, as he kept trying to get some reaction from the crowd from his (many) speeches. I blame the crowd for being such feggits. These guys really do their best to give a great show and while the place was fucking packed with people (I'm really guessing over 30.000) , most of them just stood and watched.
There were also some problems with the PA during the bass and drumsolos, 15 minutes without sound. He kept on drumming anyway and you knew he was pissed off.

But seriously, I was blown away by their sound quality. Their guitars were unbelievably heavy and crushing. Priest and Maiden should take an example out of these guys. With their fucking silent-ass concerts ::)

Yup, I am a KISS fan now 8)
If you ever have a chance of seeing them live... go and do so.

Jesus christ look at this post....Now excuse me I think I'm gonna go and die now...

Sucks that you missed Korpiklaani. I hear from a few friends that they put on a crazy show.

It so warms my heart to see Barlow back with Iced Earth.

Never heard them, just heard good things about Korpiklaani. So is Barlow like the Dickinson from Iced Earth?

I would have loved to have seen Bullet for my valentine and Avenged Sevenfold. Did you see any of Skindred? I don't care for it, but I've never heard metal reggae before.

Nope, I planned to see a lot of bands, but that just doesn't work in reality. Sometimes you just wanna chill out and eat something while conversating with someone. The atmosphere there was fantastic.

I also spend some hours there recharging my cellphone :P
They had a couple of stands where you could do this.

They have In Flames and no SYL or Sepultura?

Can't have all shitty bands at one festival :)

Holy shit!  That is a kick ass festival!  Leave it to the Euros to do it right.

Lol at the Immortal comments.  They're one of the best black metal bands ever picture wise.  Their music kicks a lot of butt too.  I've been listening to them for years.

Strapping Young Lad wont be playing any shows soon since they're essentially broken up right now.  They fucking rock and it's a shame that Powerslave hasn't listened to the best metal band of all time.

SYL is so awesome I even created a youtube account to post one of their videos that for some reason nobody else would post.

Strapping Young Lad - Almost Again

You can go to to see some of the live videos I posted too if you want.

And since you're a Priest fan I might as well post this too.

I'm sure they'll get together again sometime. I listened to that song you posted (Almost Again) and it didn't do much to me.
Willing to give them another shot though.
