Granted, it was one that I'd seen a billion years ago (original Ghost in the Shell) but still, I'm the "hates wacky jappy and anything anime related" guy.  This hurts my rep.

Anywho what I wanted to ask was, are the GitS:SAC series worth watching?  What about the sequel to the original movie?  I understand they're set in different timelines/realities/whatever, but I still enjoyed the movie enough that afterwards I was like, "wow I wouldn't mind watching more of this crap".  Also I'm trying to kill time in between gigs, next footage doesn't show up for 2 1/2 weeks and I can't very well play EO2 ALL THE TIME.  Altho my copy of Toll the Hounds should be showing up early next week...

I've heard nothing but good things about the recent GitS movie. Both series are well done, and imo better than the first movie its just not really my thing.

If you like action with intrigue, the GitS stuff is great.

So in short, Viz isn't wrong.

Question for distant and maf:  when you say you didn't like the films but the series are great, are the series typically "anime-ish" for lack of a better term?

There's a great deal of techno-babble and political-speak at times, but overall, they don't fall victim to "typical anime syndrome."

Whenever me and my buddies would get really high, we'd put on the first episode ever of Ranma with english dub and the english subs and would die laughing at all the times the silly slanty-eyes would mess up the subs over an english language.

People will recommend Stand Alone to you and you will hate them for it.  It is full of the worst nonsensical pseudo-philo-theo-socio-bullshit that anime can muster.

Check out Kon's work. Paranoia Agent is a good place to start.

Don't start with Paranoia Agent. I love it, but it can be nonsensical and requires knowledge of Japanese history and popular culture to follow along.

Watch Perfect Blue or Millenium Actress for your first exposure to Kon. They only require 2 hours of your time each, and are very stand alone in nature.

Serial Experiments Lain seems a bit up your alley, if you're into the slightly cyberpunk settings with lots of philosophical questions of existence. It's a bit of a mindfuck and even after watching the whole thing twice, I'm still not too sure what it was about. 13 episodes, and could be purchased for pretty cheap since they re-released it a few years ago. Not really that big into anime, apart from game art, but this is one of the few series that compelled me to watch the whole thing.

And yeah, the girl looks like 12 years old, but there's no loli/pedo shit in it so don't fear.

GitS movies and tv series are entirely different.

The movies emphasize philosophy as a major theme. SAC places emphasis on politics, intrigue, and self contained stories. It's like a cop drama, but in anime form.

This is why a lot of SAC fans tend to hate the movies but love SAC 1 and 2. The movies come off as preachy and sometimes are entirely boring. SAC has everything going for it.

Yeah, it's much more blatant. If the GITS movies were more like the Stand Alone episodes in terms of how they handle philosophy.. omg

I wrote this before until I realized you weren't asking for recommendations in general and then removed it. But since the thread has turned into that anyway, might as well repost it.

Coming from someone else who generally hates anime and japafags...

Cromartie High School if you like Adult Swim type humor ala Sealab, Aqua Teen HF. Truly inspired.
The Ping Pong Club for South Park type humor (before South Park was topical)
Serial Experiments Lain for mystical shit

Most of the rest I've seen is poop. Actually, an episode I've seen of Gantz looked intriguing, but I never bothered buying it. Maybe some day. All the usual "anime recommendations for people who don't like anime" you'd see on GAF and similar places are 95% of the time things only a full blown anime dork and/or 18-year old would enjoy, like Berserk and Samurai Champloo and Rurouni Kenshin that kind of juvenile angsty sword garbage. They're just trying to ensnare you into their hive. Don't fall into their trap, man. Stay strong.  :usacry

They're bad recommendations for people who don't generally like anime. While those series aren't filled with stereotypical submissive blue haired lolis with saucer eyes, they're both really angsty and pouty. It's still stuff aimed at teenage boys, nowhere as deep or well written as people tell you they are. At least in my experience.

Most people with taste in anime don't suggest the tv series.

They suggest this:

Mupepe can vouch for me. He's not a big anime fan, and I let him borrow it when I got it 8 years ago. He loved it. It's the anime I suggest to non-anime fans all the time.

And yeah, Kino's Journey is a pretty unique short series.
