Trailer

Thunder Force III is in my top 5 shooters of all time.  Let's hope that they really pull out the stops on this one.  You can clearly see multiple ships!  Hopefully you can pick?

Thunder Force III has some of the best music of the 16-bit era, bar none.  BRING IT, TS

Why put it on a PS2 disk tho?

Why not just PSN/XBLA it?

thank FUCK it isn't downloadble. or portable. those are the standing excuses for developers to half-ass things. a retail 360 version would have been cool, but at least ps2 means i don't have to pray for a domestic release

4 is my favorite -- it actually might be my favorite horizontal shooter ever. really long and clever and challenging, some of the best console graphics from that era, AWESOME CHIPTUNE BUTTROCK

then 5. the saturn version. dodgy visuals, but the free range weapon rules, and it's a lot of fun to replay

then 3...which was amazing at the time, but may not have aged that well. great soundtrack certainly, but it's really easy, and tecnosoft's pixel art was still pretty crude at that point. actually gate of thunder does the tf3 thing better than tf3

downloadable = no need to wait for a localized version, with xbla at least.

and i don't know why you like a retail 360 release, shit is always region locked and after Senko No Ronde, i doubt anyone would bother localizing these niche games.

there are like five good, original games between all the console download services. obviously an xbla version would be great if they kept the quality up, but that rarely, rarely happens

I played III a few months ago and, while not as good as IV, it still satands up pretty well.

It's still fun, just a good bit too easy.

I agree that III is a bit easy, but only to those of us who have played it a ton.  That's one thing I always liked about the Thunder Force series (well, 3/4/5, anyway) - they are memorization shooters, not twitch shooters.  You get better every time you play through the level until you have it down - and then they are still fun because you get into the 'flow' when you play back through it.

And the music is to die for:

Can't beat that with a huge stick.  I love it when the stage STOPS AND THEN STARTS SCROLLING BACKWARDS >< :rock  I remember that part of their ad campaign was that the game featured 'line scrolling' - meaning they could change the direction that they are scrolling mid-stage as well as scrolling diagonally.

I for one am happy with it being at PS2 release.  It will go great on my shelf next to Gradius V, the best shooter of last gen.  It would be hella hot if they did PSN/XBLA releases of the previous ones tho.  Or a PSP collection, I'd buy that immediately.

i thought 'line scrolling' referred to effects like the ones in the fire stage, where they could make each line scroll separately. i don't think there's anything special about being able to change scrolling direction mid-stage, anyway -- there are ancient games that do that

edit: or wait, maybe line scrolling is parallax scrolling where each line scrolls at a different rate. man, i haven't even thought about these terms since nick rox would abuse them in the pages of gamefan

I always called that "raster effects" due to the emulator term for it, like individual line scrolling, or when the screen distorts in a wavelike pattern (i.e. in Dragon Warrior 3 when you step into a teleporter).

Not so say that I'm recollecting right, but I SWEAR somewhere on the ad or box copy it intimated that line scrolling was what let the stages scroll diagonally and such.  Maybe they got it wrong :P
