How old is this dog?  Adult dogs are way easier to care for than puppies... if they were housebroken and trained properly, that is.  Ask the previous owners if the dog has vet records... you need to know if the dog has any pre-existing conditions, etc.  Also, since it's a small dog you're probably going to keep it inside for the most part I'm assuming.  Still, it might be a good idea to put it on heartworm preventative medication and flea preventative.

If you need help with any behavioral issues, I recommend:  http://www.petvideo.com/index.cgi?channel=1  Feel free to ask me as well, I pretty much dogsit two huge newfoundland dogs and a shih tzu on a permanent basis as well as owning my own basset hound.  I live in a farking zoo.

If you're unsure of something, just take him to the vet.  It's probably a good idea anyway as the vet can check the dog over and can fill you in on what you need to do.

As Card Cheat said, heartworm and fleas are the main things.  He should be getting heartworm tablets - it has to be done since heartworm is fatal.  Fleas can be a problem, how much of a problem depends on the time of year and your circumstances (such as whether you have many cats around).

It's a good idea to flip the dog on his back and check for fleas particularly between the penis and the ass - if they have a flea it's likely to be around there.  For one flea, you can just remove it with your fingers.  But if the dog is scratching more than usual you should give him a flea treatment.  The vet can let you know what time of year you need to be more careful (usually summer).  Don't let fleas get away on you - they can lay a bunch of eggs within a day or two.  A flea treatment will sort that though.

You can also give him an all-wormer tablet for other types of worm, but this isn't as critical as heartworm.  If he starts dragging his ass on the carpet, well, he probably should get an all-wormer tablet I would think.

How often should I wash the dog? I figured everyday I'd give it a good cleaning in the bathtub, but I don't want to over clean it or something. Should I buy a special dog shampoo too? Ive been using mane and tail, which says it's safe for animals but I don't know if they mean just horses.

Oh and is normal for him to not sleep unless I'm there with him?

Whoa- definitely do NOT wash that guy every day.  Dogs skin is not like our skin- it will react poorly to frequent bathing.  I wash my basset hound once every couple of weeks, and that's only because he's got skin issues and needs to be bathed with a special shampoo.  Also yes, you don't want to use human shampoo on dogs regularly.  You'll need a dog shampoo, a bottle will last you a good long while.  I wash the newfs once every couple of months, but they spend a lot of time in the ocean and the nearby lake so they stay pretty clean.  The shih tzu has to be groomed by a professional groomer, it's a pain in the ass and costs $40 each time he goes.  Different dogs require different grooming.  You'll want to brush the dog once or twice a week for a healthy coat.

As for the sleeping thing, look at it from his perspective- he's in a completely new environment, and just after your friend's dad had him for a couple of days.  He's probably pretty nervous, so not wanting to sleep unless he has someone there with him is not out of the norm.

Unless he's rolling in dirt or starting to stink, probably every two weeks is the most often you have to wash him.  Around 4-5 weeks is the longest I can go with my dog.  Depending on the sensitivity of his skin, human shampoo can not be good for them, try to find some reasonably-priced dog shampoo at the supermarket.  Otherwise, baby shampoo is an option.

Depending on his coat it's probably more important to comb or brush him regularly to stop too many knots building up.  Either that or keep his coat short, it'll need much less attention then.

Is he yelping or whining if you leave him alone in the evening?  If so, you'll have to be hard on him to break the habit.  Don't respond if he whines (get some earplugs or something) and he should stop it in about a week.

Heartworm tablets are cheap if you get the ones that you give every day - maybe $5-10 a year or something.  If you get the chewable ones that you give once a month they're a lot more - $50.  You can also get the vet to give an annual injection, that's expensive too of course.

I do the daily ones because it's too easy to forget the monthly ones unless you can put a reminder somewhere for yourself.  If you do it every day, it's a routine.

For flea stuff, I find a monthly spot-on ones works well - I just put one on if the dog he looks like he's itchy or I think he's got more than a stray flea, use about 3-4 capsules a year.  They cost maybe $50 for a six capsules (it's hard for me to know what you'll pay because I'm in Australia).  You can also get powders and washes.  It's down to personal preference.

If he follows you that's quite OK.  Some dogs will follow at your feet everywhere you go.  Plus he's away from what he knew as his owners so would be quite worried I would think.  Just watch for bad habits (like growling) and nip them in the bud before they get worse.  A firm tap on the butt and a stern NO gets the message across.  And obviously lots of compliments when he does the right thing.

Fleas: don't use flea collars, over-the-counter powders, or anything like that. Lots of dogs (and cats, too!) have bad reactions to those and it isn't something you want to chance. Check http://www.hartzvictims.org/ for more info on that. Get Frontline, Advantage, or something like that from your vet's office to be safe and keep your guy flea-free.

Food: don't skimp on it. Feeding Alpo or Dad's or something like that is akin to you eating McD's or frozen processed meals or cardboard every day. Things like IAMS, Eukanuba, and Science Diet are like middle of the road type foods. Better than the cheap stuff, but not the best. Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Royal Canin, and Canidae are the best foods out there. My local Pet Supplies Plus carries them, and you might be able to find them at PetSmart and PetCo as well. The best part about good food? Your dog will be healthier and it will poop less.

Also, when you switch his food, do it gradually to avoid any tummy upsets or refusal of the new food.

Bowls: stainless steel and ceramic are your best bets. Plastic bowls are nice, but can be easily scratched. Bacteria can live in the scratches and this can cause your dog to get acne on his chin. A stainless steel or ceramic bowl will avoid this. Of course, wash them regularly and keep his water dish full.

Have fun with your new dog! :D

I agree with all nikki's advice.

Since you guys have the same brands, I second the Frontline or similar spot-on.

I also agree on the food.  If you are going to give dry food for part of his diet, check the ingredients list and ensure meat is high on the list of ingredients - in the first couple of spots preferrably.  That way the main ingredient is meat rather than fibre filler.  I get IAMS for my dog.

I buy fresh meat for my dog from a pet butcher - they don't put preservatives in the meat.  It costs around half the price of meat you buy for human consumption.  Whether you give raw or cooked meat is an endless debate - at the end of the day, just make sure it's good meat with not too much fat in it.  If I buy meat from the supermarket for the dog, I cook it and pour away the juice which hopefully also gets rid of most of the crap that they put on the meat.

I tend to cook all my dog's meat because it lasts longer in the fridge whereas raw meat needs to be used sooner.

Vegetables are not essential but are very good for your dog as well (about 1/3 of their diet max), but you need to steam it or if it's raw mush it up in a processor.  Dog stomachs can't process chunks of vegetables very well as I recall.  My dog prefers pumpkin, sweet potato and zucchini.  Different dogs like different things.

Rice, pasta, and similar aren't of much use to your dog - their stomach's can't process those sorts of foods.

Dogs do tend themselves quite a bit - when they're sitting by themselves if they're not sleeping they'll often lick or chew a bit.  Some is normal, but if he seems obsessed or starts to chew the hair away on his butt or side for example, he might have a minor skin condition (which is not unusual).  A vet will be able to tell straight away.  They can also chew excessively when they're nervous so he may settle down after a couple of weeks.

As for weedkiller, keep him away from it for at least a couple of days I'd say.  If it's lawn weedkiller, you can always give his feet a bit of a rinse after he's been out if you're concerned.

Sounds like he's going to be getting spoiled for a while.  :-*

Yes, this.

@Nikki: So I guess getting Beneful was a bad idea? The lady there said it would be perfect for my dog, and not knowing beforehand I couldn't say no. I will be getting Royal Canin from now on.

Beneful isn't the best. I can't find the ingredients online, so take a look at your bag. Is it like ground yellow corn, cornmeal, soybean meal, brewer's rice, etc? If so, that's bad.

Here's the ingredients for Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul:
Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice, oatmeal, millet, white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), potatoes, egg product, tomato pomace, duck, salmon, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, choline chloride, dried chicory root, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine, Enterococcus faecieum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevesiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

The rest isn't important really, but see that first line? That's the kind of thing you want to see. Here's a quick thing about reading labels for your pet's food: http://www.bluebuff.com/health/readalabel.shtml

Re: the chewing. Dogs can get itchies on their skin and that can often be remedied with a better food. My friend's bichon, for example, is allergic to beef. He gets hot spots on his skin and licks/bites them until they're open sores when he eats beef. So the food he eats is a venison and duck formula with no beef. Finding that out was mostly trial and error for them from what I remember. Dogs also just lick/chew themselves, like Bildi said. As long as your dog isn't giving himself open sores or bald spots, it's probably fine. :)

Re: the weedkiller. Like Bildi said, I'd rinse his feet after he's been out. Also, make sure you supervise him and don't let him eat anything outside.

He sounds like a great dog and you sound like you're going to be a great owner  :).  nikki seems to be a fount of knowledge on this - what she says sounds very good to me.  Yay dog lovers and animal lovers in general!  :heartbeat

If the dog food you bought isn't so hot don't stress too much.  You can always give it in smaller quantities mixed in with better foods, and 3lbs won't last too long anyway.

Regarding the growling, I am not very knowledgeable on dog behaviour so please take my advice with a grain of salt and someone may chime in and call me a moron which is OK.  Also, my little dog sometimes growls when we're out walking, so I'm not an expert on solving the problem at all.

He needs to understand that he is on the bottom rung under everyone else in the house.  At the moment, I think he's settling into what he believes is the number two position in the house (with you as the boss).  If he's on your bed, this might not help.  I'd move him off for a while at least.  You also might want to make up a place for him to sleep in another room away from you - you can always buy a little foam house or something in this case.  He probably would like to have his own place where he knows he can go anyway.

Again, I'm no expert, but I'd keep a close eye on it like you said.  He'll probably also settle as he gets used to the new surroundings.

Best of luck!  :)

About the pink thing in your dog's eye, it might have cherry eye.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cherry_eye

A few weeks after getting my current dog, she got cherry eye, and I was so scared she had a horrible affliction. She had the surgery to get it fixed and was all right immediately afterwards, it turned out to not be such a big deal. You might want to have your vet take a look when you go in for checkups.

if you're going for a decent marinade, stick to a garlic southwest style. teriyaki is terrible with a dog of any size. also, grill on a lower heat -- spread the coals. well-done golden lab in particular is stringy and hard to chew.

The socks are on at night. He go's under my blanket and right for the socks, which worries me because I'm always thinking I might kick him.

I am happy though, I moved his bed into my room so he'd get used to it and would hopefully sleep in it no matter what. He's taken to it very well, though he's also taken my blanket hostage.

Take an old shirt or something you don't need, rub it against your neck for a minute or two and then toss it onto his bed.  That way he'll have your scent in his bed.  Then you can hopefully reclaim your blanket.

I don't know if I'd do this. Even if we can't smell it, the dog might still be able to, and then they'll keep peeing in that spot. They make enzyme cleaners specifically for pet urine to prevent this, which is awesome.

In the interim you could also use white vinegar for pee spots - I understand it's good at killing bacteria and odours.  I've used it now and then (mixed 50/50 with water) and it seems to work.

Of course he likes the wet food better, all animals (dogs and cats) do.  If you feed him just that, he's gonna get bitchy and not want to eat anything else.  Mixing it with the dry food is a good idea, and limiting it to one meal a day is also a good idea.  My dogs get canned Wellness (I rotate the flavors to keep it interesting) along with their dry food for breakfast and just dry food for dinner.

Keeping him on a line in the back yard is good for a short term solution, but be aware that a lot of areas have laws regarding keeping dogs chained up for lengthy periods of time.  Also be aware that a spike that goes into the ground is a bad idea, because if your dog sees something and goes after it odds are he'll pull the spike out and then your dog will be running down the street, dragging his line after him.  Anchoring the leash/line to something more solid, like a fence post or something is a good solution.

Also, you never mentioned, but is he neutered?  Has he had his rabies shots?  If not you could try contacting the local humane society, they usually have a program where they'll do the rabies shot for like $5 and might be able to hook you up with a reduced cost neuter if he still needs that.  And I would definitely recommend doing so if he hasn't been, it makes them better pets and cuts down on unwanted pregnancies.

YES, THIS OH MY GOD. I am such a proponent of spay/neuter I can't believe I didn't mention this. Please spay or neuter your pets! :D :D

Mixing dry and wet food is just fine. If the dog starts to get heavy, though, definitely cut back on the wet food. Make sure he always has fresh water to drink. They make pet fountains that you might want to look into--lots of dogs and cats like the running water.

Spaying is when they remove the ovaries, uterus, etc from your female dog. Neutering is when they remove the testes from your male dog. Neutering is less expensive because it's a less invasive procedure. Recovery time is also shorter.

Neutered dogs are more tame, less likely to roam, less likely to spray and mark things with their piss, less likely to be aggressive, and will likely live longer. Basically, it's way better to neuter your dog than to leave it intact.

Look into the heartworm stuff soon, too, because that isn't something you want your dog to get. :)

Yeah, heartworm's extremely important.  The vet will have the tablets and they're cheap.  Treating a dog that has heartworm is a very long process and there's a lot of risk the dog will die (and it's very difficult yo tell that a dog has heartworm to begin with I think).  Tablets are only a preventative measure, they can't treat heartworm that already exists, so you want to get him on them straight away.

If you can't afford to get his balls removed yet, don't panic.  But I'd get it done as soon as you can as it will benefit the dog and decrease risks to him (they can get cancer in their nuts if I remember correctly).
