The destruction looks pretty damn good.  Reminds me of those demos of that physics card from a couple years ago.  Still to be determined if these guys can actually build a decent game around it though.

They seem to be employing similar techniques as Crysis (on a larger scale, as these buildings seem much more complex than the little shacks you blow apart in Crysis).  It doesn't quite look as good when actually falling apart, though, but I'd imagine that's more due to the incredible object motion blur Crysis applies to everything.

This does look pretty neat, though.  I hope they can pull it together and deliver a solid game.

freespace 2 is one of the best pc games ever made.

I never liked Red Faction that much, for all the coolness of the destructable environments, the actual gunplay was weak and the actual art that was in the game wasn't all that hot to begin with-most of the distinctive visual theme of the game must have gotten lost in translation from concept to production.

This one isn't doing that much for me either, but it's still really early and they are obviously putting their biggest effort into Saint's Row 2 at this point.

Next gen geo mod

Me and some other guy just stood around and hammered down a giant tower and watched it crumble down.  Another point I was in a house  taking cover from some dude shooting giant shurikens at me, then some other guy rams his ass through the wall with a rhino backpack and pushes me out the other side.

I don't even remember signing up for it, but I'm glad I did.  This is really fun.  In the last match I just grabbed a jetpack and would fly around dropping explosives all over a building the enemy was hiding in, then I would blow the entire place to hell.

Instead of the usual Battlefield or Halo style of Base capturing where you run and stand in a spot, you are supposed to level a building and then build your new one in its place.

That was so awesome.  The game bugged out and kicked everyone except for me and like 3 other people, so we just went to see how much destruction you can cause.  We found a giant building and knocked out all the walls and the entire second floor fell down and killed one of us.  The destruction really is amazing.

If it makes you feel better, this dev I was playing with says that the multiplayer beta doesn't have the complete destruction system in yet.  Apparently the big thing missing is that buildings can't fall on their own weight.  So in single player if you knock out like two of the pillars holding a building up, it would topple over because it can't hold the weight.

That is a bit weird.  I have been in a bunch of beta and they always said the game name.

I think this game is actually pretty fun.  Even if it didn't have the amazing destruction, it still would probably be enjoyable, but the destruction really makes it great.  I really dig the backpack system.  Basically there are several in the world you can swap between.  Jetpack is a...jetpack.  This other one lets you run fast (this with the hammer is amazing).  There is one that causes a shock wave around you that knocks enemies down.  There is one that makes your weapons more powerful.  Then there is this one awesome one called Rhino that makes you charge forward really fast and destroy anything in your path.  The best is seeing an enemy through a crack in the wall and charging his ass through the wall.

The only real bad thing is that the levels themselves are bit boring because it is set on Mars.  There are three levels or so in the beta and the only way to tell them apart is how red they are.  It may seem like a joke, but literally there is one really red level, one that is less red, then one that is very light red.

If IGN gives out Beta keys to insiders, I will post that one over here for someone to grab.  No use for two of them myself.

And yeah, the dev playing kind of attacked Mercs 2 when someone else brought it up saying that and BFBC just swap models instead of having true destruction.  I thought that was kind of funny, but he has total right to rag on any game that thinks they do destruction better than this.  I really want to check out the single player now since the destruction is even better in that.
