I went on irc and jobber who is always there says some dude was spamming the irc while he was away

no damage done, obviously, since our irc is dead half the time anyway but they left a link to a site with this news

Yeh, the forums were compromized today. I had a phonecall from Dave explaining what had happened - and got Dan to pull the site offline until I was home to sort things. There isn't no backup's neither (Yeh - whoever attacked us totally fuck us over LULZ) so i'll have to see what I can do with the current database. This is the trouble with running 'main-stream' forum software - there's always some security issue.

The forums will be back - but expect a fresh start (Yeh - i'm probably just as pissed off as the rest of you are.. But that's life.) All PRO members will get their pro back - I have transaction logs of who paid (And I pretty much remembered who had paid up anyway)

As far as I know, the attackers are either;
1. Visitors to http://www.evilbore.com/
or
2. Owners of http://www.evilbore.com/

In the meantime - all Canadian traffic has been blocked from accessing the site.

Evilbore should get rid of Icons, and start having PRO members so that we could pay a small fee to lord over dirty poor free users. Ideally, PRO Member status would allow you to change the title of one non-pro member's thread per week, and edit two Leper's posts per week. Also we could have a PRO forum, where we could discuss what unchangeable titles to give free users.

I sent an e-mail to whomever posted that article asking to forward any information they have to me so I can look into it. We're kind of an irreverent site, so I have no idea who would actually be interested in hacking us.

And yeah, a bunch of folks signed up today. I denied half of them and the others were required to activate through the e-mail addy they signed up with. Nothing really happened. I'm looking at data and usage on our backend and I cannot see any noticeable effects.

I mean its possible, but it requires certain variables to be done, like you willco clicking on a suspiciously coded link in a PM or something dumb like that

make a db backup offsite if you want, just in case

Yeah, I'm not saying we've been hacked and I'm certainly aware of thanks to security discussions with other forum operators of the risks involved with my account. Database backups are routine and I will reinforce some safety guards to make sure that we're not totally vunerable.

i remember one time at this one forum that got hacked annually, someone put up a bunch of images of dead bodies :x when the site got hacked one time.

This whole thing is pretty crazy. I wish the owners of the site could send me some IP address and information so we can figure out who it might be on our end. In the meanwhile, I did backup the database offsite (I miss the days when the forum database was just 8MB) as per Viz's suggestion.
