Castlevania Portrait Of Ruin!
« on: November 16, 2006, 03:23:37 AM »
 :D :D :D :D

Just picked it up.  I love it when a new "Metroidvania" is released...can't stop playing them until I get everything.  :)  The store also had Elite Beat Agents, much to my surprise.  Hope it's better than Ouendan was.

Pretty nice so far, although more of the same as expected.  Not sure how much I dig the soundtrack yet (I know Yuzo Koshiro contributed to some of it), and the character animation isn't as smooth as Soma's in the previous game, but that's likely because you now control two of them at once.  You can choose to alternate between characters or summon the other onscreen and let the CPU play as him/her.  Just got the dual crush super attack, but didn't try it yet.  Jonathon uses different types of weapons (he's not limited to a whip), and Charlotte uses magic attacks from her book (the first weapon you get for her makes a sword come out of her book when you attack).  Despite the animation, the graphics are better than all previous versions, with new 3D elements, backgrounds, and even some enemies.  There's also a good amount of new enemies this time around, too, which is a welcome addition.  I hear this game is a bit short, but there's multiple endings and apparently something like seven or eight secret characters to use.  I expect to least be as long, if not longer (which is what was said earlier on) than the previous game.

So I found out who the secret characters are.  They are in teams like the main characters, except for the last character, who has no story mode (and probably isn't playable in the 1P mode).  The big surprise is that you get to play as

is a boss in the game, too.   :o

This game keeps getting better and better.  :D  I think it's a bit more challenging than DoS, although still also a bit on the easy side.

DoS was so disapointing. Hopefully this is good.

It's better than DoS (which was not a disappointment to me, but not as good as AoS was IMO).  I think it starts off almost a bit TOO easy and has that "been there, done that feel" in early parts of the castle, but once you go in the portraits, it all changes.  :)  There are some castle parts that are clearly taken from SOTN (not the same, but definitely inspired by it), but the new enemies in these areas help to make it better.

It was AoS 1.5 except that AoS did almost everything better. Felt way too familiar and rehashed. It was then that I starting doubt the future of the Metroidvania formula. Hopefully PoR wows me.

I thought I was done with the game, until I beat a certain boss fight the "right way" and found FIVE MORE portraits to go through!   :o  Also I can now fight against
spoiler (click to show/hide)
RICHTER BELMONT one on one; my level is too damn low right now as he wins if he hits me like twice.  You don't die against him, but you do lose items of you use them.

Also it plays the BGM from the first stage of Rondo of Blood.  :D
