Play from hard drive.  Copy your games from the game disc and play directly from the hard drive.  Not only will the drive not spin, but load times are quicker, as well.  Of course, you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game.

    * Access Xbox LIVE Marketplace on the Web.  Browse and purchase Marketplace content whenever you want from Xbox.com and it downloads automatically to your console.  Purchase that new map, television episode, the latest Xbox LIVE Arcade game or set up a movie to watch when you get home from work.

    * Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide.  For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide.  You can even access your full games library at all times.  No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

    * LIVE Party system.  Create a party of up to eight friends, and stay with them from one game to another, or watch a Netflix movie together, or share a slideshow of your personal photos.  It works with all Xbox 360 titles, not just upcoming games.  LIVE Party allows up to eight  people to chat in the dashboard, so you can meet up before playing.

    * Xbox LIVE Primetime. This whole new category of games is going to give you more reasons to get online with your friends.  Games will support everything you’d expect, like Achievements and leader boards, but many of these games will include real prizes.  You can invite your friends, and even set a reminder for an upcoming show.  Each game is broadcast simultaneously, so everyone is answering the same questions.  Many events will have a live host, calling the shots as they happen.

    * Avatars. Your online identity started as a Gamertag - it then grew into a personalized Gamercard. Now, it has evolved even further into avatars.  You can express your style, check out new outfits and share this with the community.  Avatars will also be integrated into Xbox LIVE Arcade games, LIVE Party, as well as retail games.

    * New display support. Because you asked for it, we are adding 16X10 over VGA or HDMI, and support for 1440x900 or 1680x1050.

This is only the beginning. Over the next few months, we will share more details on the upcoming changes.

Now everyone is down with installation?  :P

Sounds good to me, though.  Should really help some of those games that struggle with texture pop-in and such.  Now I'll need to upgrade that original 20gb drive.

But then what if my friends have installed it and I haven't, they'd have to wait for my game to take forever to load and online gaming would be ruined!

alt: But then what if I have it installed, and then some buddy of mine goes to play another game, and he has it installed, but I have to first uninstall some game because I ran out of space before I can install this game? Online gaming would be ruined!

Well I'm glad they're fucking optional, because I have about 10g of rotating HDD space with a couple demos installed, and no intention of paying $100 for a 40g upgrade.

I can't really argue with that logic, although I'm more of a single player type of guy so maybe that just doesn't bother me.  I won't be installing any games either way.  the HDD prices are highway robbery and I hate waiting.

http://gizmodo.com/5025122/xbox-360-fall-dashboard-update-details

Here's what we just learned from Microsoft in their round table discussion on Xbox Live and the new Dashboard. First, the impetus for re-designing the dash was that the current content navigation is too difficult. They only planned on a couple hundred/thousand items, but they currently have 20,000+ pieces of content in their marketplace. There needed to be a change, and the change is the streamlined dash. Here's what else we found.

• There might not be any de-listing of content from the marketplace now. MIGHT. Microsoft says they haven't de-listed anything "yet", and the whole point of the new dash is to make things easier to find—the problem that de-listing games was going to solve.

• Playing from the hard drive still requires games to be in the drive while you play, which means you can't just load all your games onto your Xbox and swap games from your couch.

• Hard drive gaming is mostly for saving load times.

• The current blade-based dash design still exists inside the Guide, and they've ported a lot of the current dash features there so you can actually access much of it from inside games. No browsing marketplace though.

• The new dashboard is fast and fluid, getting rid of the delays that come up when you're switching blades (occasionally) and loading up the thumbnails of your XBLA games. There's also an Apple TV-like reflection under each icon representing games, and the whole thing looks vaguely Cover Flow-like.

• There's a new Quick Launch feature from the Guide (the thing that pops up when you click the Xbox button on your controller) that lets you switch to any game you currently have installed. XBLA games or retail (if the disc is in your drive).

• Avatars will be used in XBLA games, Xbox 360 retail games and Xbox Primetime games.

• Avatars will be available for everyone, even Xbox Live Silver members. If you don't like them, you can still use gamerpics instead.

• "Primetime" games are like gameshows and will be more of a streamed experience rather than a boxed game or an XBLA game. It's a third type of game on the Xbox.

• All of the marketplace content will be listed on xbox.com so you can browse and queue up downloads for them to your Xbox. If your console is on, it seems like stuff is downloaded as you add them to your queue.

• The 8-people party system lets you basically chat with all your friends no matter where you are in any game, and then be able to drag each one through games with you. People who don't have the game the party leader loaded will get a screen telling them to go buy it.

Nice try Microsoft, but I'm not buying your stupidly overpriced hard drive.

... but I still think the installs are great.  I've got enough room on my hard drive for one or two games which is all I generally play at the one time.

I pray the new dashboard really is fast.

Overall, awesome stuff.

The problem is the PS3 doesn't load noticeably faster even with the mandatory HD installs.

[The problem is the PS3 doesn't load noticeably faster even with the mandatory HD installs.

Some games do, and those that are optional make a BIG difference.

Anyone with an HD Loader can vouch for loading games, even those that don't support it, onto your HD makes a huge difference.

It makes a big difference for the PS3 itself but not a big difference between the PS3 and 360 versions.  Plenty of reviews support the logic that the HD installs are just due to the PS3's blu-ray drive being too slow.

well, the only limitation they mentioned is the "you will still need the disc in the tray to prove you own the game" so that means it's universal for all games.

nice jump in logic.  just because they didn't specifically say otherwise doesn't mean it's assumed to be universal.

just like at the press conference they didn't mention that all 8 people watching netflix with you have to also be netflix subscribers to watch them.

not saying it won't be universal -- just pointing out it can go both ways.

Microsoft
having long studied
Sony's simple convergence device and gaming plan
dispensed great mysery upon the Sony fanboys.

Victorious, the xfags now turned to the vanquished.
Applying what they had learned about their enemy,
the Xfags turned to an alternate and readily available alternative power source:
previous exhalted prime reasons to own the PS3 coupled with bitter fanboy tears.

The Party system, another new feature of the upcoming Dashboard overhaul lets you join up with up to eight friends online and hop from game from game or even movie to movie. If you're halfway through a Netflix movie and notice one of your friends pop online, you can invite them into your Party. If she is also a Netflix member and accepts your request, she will come into the film at the exact point you are watching it, and you can chat and watch the second half together.

Quote
Whitten said the main channels of the new interface won't be cluttered with ads. Instead there will be a new section – the Spotlight Channel -- dedicated solely to marketing and advertising from Microsoft and its corporate partners. You might see info about an upcoming online event or a pitch for an upcoming third-party game in this section. The Games Channel is where you'll find the game-related content formerly associated with Marketplace. It has four sections: Browse Games, Top Downloads, New Arrivals and Major's Picks. From here, you can browse and buy Xbox Live Arcade games, Xbox Originals and downloadable content.

Quote
One of the coolest changes to the Dashboard is a major behind-the-scenes shift. Currently, if you're playing, say, Assault Heroes 2 with a friend online and want to switch to Carcassonne, you have to exit the game, go to the dashboard, start up the new game and re-invite your friend. With the new Party system you can bring up the guide in Assault Heroes 2, choose Carcassonne and take your whole party to the new game right from there. It's a huge change that should make playing games online with friends much more streamlined.
