E3 has lost it's smile

They need to go back to letting the great unwashed mass of fanthings run roughshod for 3 or 4 days straight.  Replete with booth babes, Kentia Hall and all the things that made E3 interesting.  It would also be cool if Nintendo could be barred from the premises until they start making games again, but I'll settle for genuine enthusiasm amongst the attendees, skimpily dressed chicks and actual gaming announcements.

"here are the games we released during the last six months, now here are some charts, now here's 3 minutes of a game you've already seen, here are some fancy menus, now here's some minor crap we're going to play for 20 minutes, now here's some pr speak about how we're going to win"

2007 and 2008 confirm it: e3 is dead

It's there to show off certain things to the mainstream press, and it serves its purpose well. For Nintendo.

Sony and Microsoft should just issue press releases until they get their casual houses fully in order.

Maybe your useless ass should go find a casual video game message board on the internets to post on and get the fuck out of my fucking thread, shitburger.

I'm just saying! Hardcore gamers are not the audience these guys want to play to right now! The princess is not in that castle, as a certain mushroom headed dude was known to say. Certainly do not look to a Nintendo conference thinking they're going to throw you a bone. And now Sony and Microsoft have to play catch-up. Set your sights lower.

"A vaporware title that doesn't even really exist right now will come to our console after they're finished making it in Japan."

That was the biggest news this year.

Think about that.

Definitive E3 review

Microsoft

-Presentation: To say the least, they tried too hard. The casual gamer focused second half almost killed the entire thing. The first half wasted too much time on Fallout 2, which looks horrible. D

-Games: Microsoft has games. We went in knowing this and they delivered. Gears 2 looks absolutely amazing, the RE5 demo was great, etc. BUT it's a shame they didn't show off anything new, or older stuff we haven't heard much about like Alan Wake. B

-X Factor: While they didn't wow us with any new exclusive titles Microsoft stole the show with the gaming coup of the decade. A

-Overall: Little new stuff and too much emphasis on ripping off Nintendo, but demos of GOW2 and RE5 displayed they still had the games. And then there was FFXIII. A-

Nintendo

-Presentation: We've seen this dog and pony show before, and just like last time it fell flat. Nintendo's conference was aimed at getting mentions in the New York Times and discussed on The View, not at you or me. D

-Games: What games? Nintendo highlighted a slightly revised version of Wii Sports which seemed more like an expansion pack than a new title, and a music game so far behind the genre it barely deserves mention. To make matters worse, Nintendo showed off three underwhelming third party titles as if they proved developers are excited about the console. How does another Call of Duty title, a Star Wars game, and another Rayman-game-that-actually-isn't-Rayman title do anything but add fuel to the argument that maybe developers aren't interested in the Wii afterall. F

-X Factor:The 1:1 Wiimote add on is great, but seems like something that should be implemented into future controllers instead of being another additional peripheral to purchase. C-

-Overall: An embarrassment from a company that's clearly content in the fact that it can do whatever it wants and still dominate the market. The Wii and DS own the charts around the world, and while titles like Wii Sports "Resort" will continue that dominance, they won't do anything to entertain hardcore gamers. F

Sony

-Presentation:
Very slick, very cool presentation, Sony's conference was solid but not spectacular in any way. Unlike the other companies Sony focused strictly on games, and they backed that up with amazing presentations like Resistance 2 and MAG. The PS2 and PSP presentations seemed more filler than anything but overall it was solid. B

-Games: As I said above, Sony brought the goods. Resistance 2 looked great, ran smooth, etc. The highlighted PSN titles also looked good. There wasn't anything utterly amazing but the big titles look fun, which is what gaming is about. B

-X Factor: Many expected Sony to somehow respond to the FFXIII debacle. Would it be Twisted Metal? Or God of War 3? Maybe Kingdom Hearts 3? Sony instead focused on games we've known about for some time, and the only GOW3 news game by means of a CG trailer. They just couldn't regain any momentum for whatever reason. D

-Overall: Despite the lack of any "megaton" announcement Sony had a solid conference that answered questions and provided games for gamers. They stayed in their element, didn't force anything, and provided a good (albeit long) presentation. B

Totally agree with Triumph. Sure, there were a bunch of douches that really had no business being there ( :pimp ), but all the enthusiasm, fanboyism, glamour and glitz is what made E3 what it was.

in the last years of the old E3, it wasn't much more than a ton of self-indulgent navel-gazing and partisan fanboy skirmishing. It was also:

A) expensive for everyone involved
B) VERY time consuming in terms of development man hours and marketing
C) less of a trade show and more of a video game con, which reduced the legitimacy of the whole thing in terms of mainstream press

the old E3 sucked. Even more than the even older, pc-centric E3 when was around before top-shelf western teams started making console games, which also sucked.

As a marketing endeavour, E3 is just not efficient use of resources, and the only reason the big 3 console makers are there is institutional interia and because they don't trust each other to "mutually disarm" and have none of them attend.

Kentai Hall was where ANYONE was treated like a king cause every booth down there was full of desperate koreans with crappy free shit and crappy games.

Then when Interplay was real poor they lived in Kentai Hall their last years haha. Poor Interplay. There were such fukin snobs about their booth too.

Didn't SEGA get stuck there the last year or two that the show was actually E3?  I seem to remember that, or maybe I'm just thinking they should have been there.

Sure the old E3 was a horrible waste of resources and a pain in the ass for developers, but it was fun spectacle.

Also, think of all the poor bimbos that no longer are able to make easy money standing around enduring the longing gazes of the unsexed nerdlings walking by.  THINK OF THE BOOTH BABES, FOR THE LOVE OF CHRIST!

E3 08 = pile of crap

So far, this has been worse than E3 07, which was probably one of the worst shows I've remembered (I think I started caring in 1998).  Not just for fanboy meltdowns and bitter tears of ownage, but because there was little substance announced.  Since it is Nintendo, I can fully expect Wii Music to go no more risque than Smash Mouth or Switchfoot.
