Help me build a PC for cheap!
« on: July 15, 2008, 10:22:42 PM »
We have about $600 to work with and I'm fully capable of building one for scratch.  Everytime I seem to buy parts, you dudes find cheaper ones, so instead of engaging in a pissing contest - I'm putting you all to work.

Specify what you do and don't need. Everything? Or can you salvage a case, DVD drives, mouse, keyboard, etc.

I do need a new case, but peripherals aren't a concern.  So we need a motherboard, processor, RAM, videocard, case and power supply.

For $600?  What do you want this thing to do?

Is it just for email/documents, or do you want any gaming done on it? $600 almost good enough for a mid-level gaming PC, assuming you have access to an OS already.

Base estimate~
HDD $100
2GRam $100
PSU $75
MOBO $100
CPU $150-200

VC would be up in the air though. And If you're spending more on a card, might as well toss in some more RAM to game...
Integrated sound is good enough for most non-audiophiles these days.

*edit* If you are tryibg to save money, a case can be had for $30-60. Late night.

if you're not building a decent gaming rig, you're wasting money. buy a low-end hp or dell, and upgrade it later.

The majors are allowing their low end models to be upgadeable now? The last time I priced Dells, most of the ones with expandable mobo's were all over $800.

I always advise against the low spec models from majors (minus laptops) because you are better off saving a bit more and getting something with room to grow, that will last a lot longer than a cheapo PC. Then again, I usually talk most friends I build for into spending twice what they budgeted.  :(
