yesterday i bought the newest issue of Giant Robot,

Mainspring

Quote
Jay Lakes first trade novel is an astounding work of creation. Lake has envisioned a clockwork solar system, where the planets move in a vast system of gears around the lamp of the Sun. It is a universe where the hand of the Creator is visible to anyone who simply looks up into the sky, and sees the track of the heavens, the wheels of the Moon, and the great Equatorial gears of the Earth itself. Mainspring is the story of a young clockmaker's apprentice, who is visited by the Archangel Gabriel. He is told that he must take the Key Perilous and rewind the Mainspring of the Earth. It is running down, and disaster to the planet will ensue if it's not rewound. From innocence and ignorance to power and self-knowledge, the young man will make the long and perilous journey to the South Polar Axis, to fulfill the commandment of his God.

Quote
The first-person narrative is about a soldier named John Perry and his exploits in the CDF (Colonial Defense Forces). Old Man's War is similar in overall structure to Robert A. Heinlein's Starship Troopers and Joe Haldeman's The Forever War as it follows Perry's military career from CDF recruit to the rank of captain. Set in a universe heavily populated with life forms, colonialists from Earth must compete for the scarce planetary real estate which is suitable for sustaining life. As such, Perry must learn to battle against a wide variety of aliens. While the soldiers in Starship Troopers and The Forever War relied on powered body armor to gain advantage over their aliens, the soldiers in Old Man's War have enhanced DNA and nanotechnology, giving them advantages in strength, speed, and endurance.

I was told that these are the three core WKW films I should start with

I didn't like Chungking Express but I'm willing to give him another shot

Also, those are the U.S. boxarts, but I got the $10 HK versions from Play-Asia (threw them in my cart while getting Matsuko)

I think my problems with Chungking were tripartite:

1) I hate Quentin Tarantino and I didn't like watching Quentin Tarantino Presents Chungking Express
2) Final Fantasy VIII ruined Faye Wong, plus I hate the Cranberries
3) The movie was given to me by an ex and I didn't watch it until after our acrimonious breakup

not a recipe for success

I watched a DL of Matsuko last night, it's awesome. It's like Amelie meets Moulin Rouge, only a tragedy.

my PSU blew last night so I ordered a new one from newegg.

I picked up a couple of older racing games for the 360 to old me over until it gets here (Forza 2 and Test Drive Unlimited). Normally I would play TDU and stuff like it on the PC but I'm somewhat turned off by reports of haxxors for that game, and wanted to try it out (even if I'm not likely to finish it).

Eh, I don't buy that.  I got suited up after speaking with two DMs and three SMs that have taken over large troubled stores or flagship locations.

I've personally seen two flagship stores where Store Managers dress up and it encourages the staff to actually groom themselves at the very least.  It also discourages robberies and customer issues - folks are less likely to cause an incident or scam the store if you're wearing a suit.  It's like an authority thing.  Plus, my new store gets regularly hit by corporate brass and nothing stands out than a Store Manager that shaves and can dress himself.

The store I'm taking over is an old warhorse, but needs a LOT of work.  The lighting is abysmal, security is ridiculously poor, the service is mediocre and the staff has been beaten down by a lack of direction and management turnover.  An injection of professionalism and an energetic attitude will hopefully bring a shock to the system.  I will be counting on my keyholder staff a lot to maintain store operations as I lean heavily on supervisors to improve the store aesthetic.  If they don't - I will.

You know, if I walked into a gamestop where everyone was wearing suits, I'd be insulted. I want people that relate to me, I want to see people wearing nerdy shit and promo gear. I'm buying video games, I'm not buying an exotic car at some fancy auto store.

In fact, if I ever go into one of these stores you speak of, I'd be compelled to rob the shit out of it.

Suit says = unapproachable. I've never worn a suit. why would I wanna talk to a dude in a suit?!

Eh, after seeing the results in other stores, I'm inclined to think otherwise.  And no offense to either ParticleReality or yourself, but GameStop is not aiming for the nerdy, evilbore-browsing demographic.  That demographic is rather small.  We're making money off the casual gamer (read: Wii soccer moms!) and they routinely grad higher on customer experience surveys based on attire.

More like Queen Elizabeth selling hot dogs... and tea!

The hardcore demographic is a much smaller part of the business than it used to be - the company cannot really survive on it alone.  It kind of sucks, but the money demands that we cater to the Wii Fit crowd.  And that crowd routinely grades higher marks to stores with better attire.  While ParticleReality wants grungy associates wearing Halo 3 caps, that is the exact thing that scares people with a large amount of disposable income from the store.

Internet message board junkies hate GameStop anyway, this shouldn't really matter.
