TomTom vs Garmin

Which is better and why?  From what I've gathered online, Garmin has better maps, and it's a toss up as far as tech goes.  TomTom's are apparently a bit cheaper.  Aside from those things, it sounds like a Canon vs. Nikon thing where both sides are just about equally good.

It's pretty Canon vs. Nikon, Nvidia vs. ATI. Either is fine. Garmin seems to be in the "lead" these days, but shrug.

Not really hard proof but anecdotal, but my dad and I were driving from Cleveland to Nashville and neither of us really had any idea how, since we've never been to Nashville before.  My dad has a Garmin, and he just plugged in the address of our hotel in Nashville and it seamlessly and perfectly got us there.  No hiccups, no lag, adjusts to human error (my dad ignored it once, lol) really easily and quickly.  We made good time–just about 8 hours.

Anyone have one with TMC? Is it usefull? Do both TomTom and Garmin send out this info to you freely, or is it subscription?

I have a Nuvi 250.

Only thing is that the map packs are like 70$.

That doesn't bug me so much because I'd rarely be buying them, plus. . .

It's non subscription.  I do pay for things like being able to check stocks, get news updates, and some of the other "bells and whistles features," but all the GPS stuff is free.

Sounds like they release yearly updates at roughly the price mentioned above, but you do not need to purchase them or anything.  The device still runs and all.  It comes with the most recent update installed (or in my case, a voucher to DL the most recent update)[/quote]

Mine comes with all the maps for the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, so I think I am mostly covered unless I want to drive to mexico to have sex with old hookers.

I want to.  Like very badly.  If I did it would either have to be the first quarter of next year or the last quarter of this year.  Plus I may or not have to fly east if someone dies, which appears to possibly be likely.

I did some googling and it seems people who've had both give a 'slight' nudge to Garmin. Mainly saying it's more accurate, faster and the (PC) software is better.

Here in Belgium it seems Garmin is cheaper, they already have a model with TMC included for around 210euros.
