my cat is HOME! =DD
« on: July 16, 2008, 08:07:17 PM »
I took Melanie to the vet this morning. She's been in renal failure for a little over two years, and yesterday she didn't eat or drink. I called as soon as they opened, and got an emergency appointment for 11:15.

Her createnine is 14.2 today. It was 3.1 last month and had been hovering around that mark for like a year and a half. The highest she's ever been is 6.6.

They're keeping her in the hospital for IV fluids and stuff. I can visit her, so I will be doing that tomorrow after work.

If she comes out of this and her values go back down, she'll need fluids more often. She'll also need a pill every day to keep her nitrogen down, because it was over 180 today and it's supposed to be 30. That's why she wasn't eating or drinking.

I hope she comes out of this. I don't want to lose her yet. My vet said we aren't writing her off yet, though, because she CAN come out of this. I just hope she does.

Please keep her in your thoughts.

Thanks guys. She's 12 and has been in kidney failure since she was 10. So she's older, but cats can live to be like 16 even with renal failure.

Here's hoping.

As a guy with a cat and a gf with four cats, I will make sure to rub each and every one of them for good luck.

Surely with the kitty power of 5 we can send good vibes.

Think positive thoughts and always talk to your cat.  If you haven't read The Pet's Prayer here's a good link.

Best of luck  :'(

I went to see her today and she didn't eat for me, but she did eat earlier for my grandparents. That's exciting, because she hadn't eaten on her own since Monday.

I'll be going to see her again tomorrow and she should be coming home on Saturday.

My biggest fear was that she would just die while I wasn't there, but my vet said that's extremely unlikely to happen. That made me feel a lot better.

Thanks for all the good wishes, everyone. Here's hoping she pulls through!

We'll have to see how far her createnine drops and if it stabilizes again. She'll be taking a pill for nausea/to keep her nitrogen levels low, so she should have her appetite back and everything.

I am absolutely going to do everything I can for her. I will only have her put to sleep if she doesn't have any quality of life anymore. If her createnine stabilizes and she gets her appetite back, even if I have to give her fluids every other day or something, I'm okay with that. As long as she still has fight in her, I'll fight for her.

my cat scratched me when i woke him from his sleep in the sink two nights ago.  it was like 3 in the morning.  a cat owner should appreciate that.  best wishes.

My friend's cat likes to sleep in the sink, especially when it drips on her. :)

My cat recently had this puffy jaw... and it had his mouth open and was drooling. Wouldnt let anyone touch it, or he'd meow like it obviously hurt. So I googled it and it had something to do with abscess tooth. So I took it to the vet, and being the good and obedient kitty he is (I am a natural leader), he got injected with some shit that cost me $100. He seems to be better recently thanks to it, which is really good.

I paid $89 for Melanie the first day, and tomorrow I'll pay the bill for her hospitalization and everything. The receptionist estimated no more than $350 for me...so when all is said and done I'll have paid probably over $400. But if it makes her better, it's worth it to me. [Plus Ecro has helped out a lot--he's a great guy. :)]

MELANIE IS HOME!!

When I called the receptionist this morning, a Dr. Ayers didn't want to send Melanie home because her createnine was still so high. Dr. Edwards, my vet, had told me that she'd send her home even if her levels were still high. The receptionist said the doctor would call me.

So my dad and I went down there and I talked to Dr. Ambrose, who I've seen before. While I was there, my little trooper was eating AND drinking, which I hadn't seen her do without vomiting after since Monday! Dr. Ambrose sent Melanie home with more fluids, pills, and as-needed nausea meds. She'll be on pills indefinitely now and we'll probably have to be more aggressive with giving her fluids, but that's okay with me.

I have to call on Monday morning to update Dr. Edwards (she's away for the weekend) and she'll decide when she wants to see Melanie again. I leave to visit my friend in Nebraska on Tuesday, so my dad will be bringing Melanie in if Dr. Edwards wants to see her to recheck createnine any time during the week.

I'm just so happy that she's home!
