WTF am I doing wrong: Onboard video -> Graphics card
« on: July 17, 2008, 09:18:33 AM »
OK, so I'm trying to install a graphics card into a PC that has onboard video. Here's the particulars of the setup:

The PC is a Dell Optiplex GX620 with onboard VGA out
The graphics card is by some shitty company I've never heard of. It's a Matrox G550 LP PCIe - http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/graphics_cards/g_series/g550lppcie/ - The card is a PCI-e x1 card.

-Here's what I've fucked with via trial and error-

The BIOS doesn't have a true disable feature of the onboard video. You have two onboard video options:
1) Auto - This will switch to the PCI Express graphics card if there's one plugged in.
2) Onboard / PEG - This says it will only use the PCI Express card if one is detected.

The computer also has one PCI-e x1 slot and one PCI-e x16 slot.

So anyway, I've tried the card in both the x1 and x16 slots, but I can't seem to get it to fucking work.

I've got the drivers for the card installed, I've updated both the system BIOS and the card firmware, but I can't figure out how the fuck to get the computer to use the card as its primary video. In Windows I can manually turn it on as an extended desktop, but I can't get it to become the primary screen.

Someone help me, or I'm liable to turn into Michael Douglas in Falling Down.

That's odd.  You can't disable it through Device Manager?

Haha, what the fuck. I just realized now that I had this working 2 days ago.

So, for whatever reason, the card can't be the primary monitor, but I confirmed 2 days ago that i was able to set that card up for use as the extended display.

So... why the fuck am I still working on this? I'll just use the onboard video as the primary monitor, and the PCI-e card as the extended desktop.

Wow, I'm an idiot.

Matrox isn't shitty.

Back in the old days of PC gaming, when 2D performance mattered, they produced the super expensive reference quality hardware that the elite would pair up with their screaming fast Pentium 66s.

So, you're saying they're totally irrelevant and shitty in today's world?
