I am digging Friday Night Lights
« on: July 18, 2008, 02:36:12 AM »
I know season 2 apparently is really shitty, but season 1 is pretty good, so far.  I'm only 2 episodes in, but I can see why people on GAF rank it so highly in the pantheon of high school television shows.  In a way, I guess it's sort of the jock sibling to Freaks and Geeks, though it appears to pay more attention to the adults living in the ecosystem as well.  What kept me from checking out the show for so long was that I was afraid of the football.  As a homosexual man, I am much too intelligent to care about sports.  Luckily, although the show uses football as a backdrop, it's not really all that prominent.  It's more of a backdrop for the whole series to take place on.

I dunno, I dig.

Season one was fantastic. Em and I gave up on season two when they kept dragging out the stupid
spoiler (click to show/hide)
murder subplot.

And don't give me the "I'm too intelligent for sports" crap.

How hormonally masculine, distantmantra.  To refute my statement, you post the PUNCHING smiley.  You'd make a good Republican.

As nerdy as I may be, I love baseball and enjoy watching soccer and football.

I'm glad you like FNL, it was a great show. I have a feeling the writers didn't expect to come back for a second season, which is why it ended up being terrible.

I read some season 2 spoilers as it was airing, and even now, just a few episodes in, it feels like the early season 2 turns are just completely out of place.  Does season 1 at least end in a spot where it's easy to drop the show?  There's no cliffhanger or anything?

Season one is self-contained. The creative team figured that the show wouldn't get renewed, so they wrapped things up perfectly.

There are plot lines that get carried over into season two, but nothing is left hanging after season one.

they never caught the rapist though

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. But, in real life, not everything is resolved.

forgetting major plot points? tsk tsk

I must have blocked it out, since it leads to the whole fucking up of the show.

TVC, you'll still be fine watching season one and then dropping it.

Season 2 gets really good by the end. Just stick with it.
